State Bank of Travancore was established in the year 1945 in Trivandrum as Travancore Bank Limited. Today, State Bank of Travancore is not only a subsidiary of State Bank Group but also has many private share-holders. In the year 1959, the bank acquired assets and liabilities of Indo-mercantile Bank. Later in the year 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964 the bank acquired Travancore forward Bank, Vasudeva Vilasom Bank and Cochin Nayar Bank respectively. Also, in the year 1965, the State Bank of Travancore acquired bank of Alwaye and Chandean Syrian Bank.
The bank is vastly spread out with its services being utilised by people from all the states in the country. The bank has a total of 1013 branches in the country out of which 758 branches (75%) are present in the state of Kerala. Customers avail the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) facilities with the 965 ATMs present across various regions. The bank also has a total number of seven zonal bank branches. There are five more regional offices that are proposed and would be opened shortly. The regions include Madurai, Hyderabad, Kottarakara, Kannur and Pala.

State Bank of Travancore has launched a new credit card called Mudra Credit Card for the benefit of micro enterprises that fall under the non-agricultural category. This product has been introduced under the influence of the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) that is formed for providing financial support to individuals in this sector. Mudra card was launched in a credit camp held by SBT in its Poonthura Branch. During the ceremony, the Chief General Manager of SBT Mr. E. K. Hari Kumar, gave the Mudra credit cards to 5 beneficiaries and also distributed 21 Mudra loan sanction letters.

In order to offer door-to-door banking facility to its customers, new mobile ATMs have been introduced as in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, by the State Bank of Travancore. The vehicle containing the ATM has high security coverage with CCTV, uninterrupted power, satellite connectivity and guarded security. This mobile ATM also serves the function of an information kiosk to provide detailed information on banking products and services, IFSC codes, branch information, mini account statements, etc. With this new innovation, SBT has made one more addition to its ATM network which is linked to the largest ATM network in India - the State Bank Group ATM network.
