What is a Visa?

Visa is a kind of official document or certificate of endorsement on your passport indicating that you are allowed to enter, leave and stay in a specific country for a specified period of time or permanently. It can be a separate certificate with a stamp marked on your passport. Visas are issued by the immigration authorities of a foreign country after checking and verifying all your credentials properly. Once, you get a visa means you are permitted to enter a country and stay there for a specific period of time. However, the permission received through visa is temporary and subject to approval from the immigration officer at the entry point.

What are the Types of Visa in India

There are different types of visas issued by immigration authorities of a country which include –

  • Single entry Visa
  • Multiple Entry Visa

Single entry Visas remains valid only for one visit to a particular country while Multiple Entry Visas permit any number of visits to a particular country within its validity tenure.

Business Visa is issued to applicants for short term visits to conduct overseas business negotiations.

Tourists Visas are mainly for the purpose of traveling from one country to another.

Residence Visa gives permits extended stay at a particular country. But, it does not give permission to take up employment in that country.

Work Visa permits to you stay and take up employment in a particular country for a specific period of time. This type of visa is also known as work permit visa.

Electronic Visas are not issued as certificates. Rather, permission is recorded in a computer.

How to Apply for a Visa?

You can apply for a visa both online and offline. In case of offline visa application, usually you need to download the application form and fill it with required details. Then, you have to submit the filled application form supported by all required credentials at your concerned visa application center. Different countries may have different application procedures for applying for visas. Many countries may not accept offline visa application. Also, the cost involved in applying for a visa also differ from countries to countries.

How to Check My Visa Status Online?

Visa status check can be done online. In order to check your visa status online, you need to visit the visa status enquiry section of a particular consulate and keep certain information handy with you. To know you passport visa status, you may be required to put the following information:

  • Application ID
  • Passport number

You can also track your visa status by visiting a third party website and entering your passport number and date of birth. It is very easy to track your visa status by using your passport number.

Multiple Entry Documents that prove employment, such as document of appointment. Yes, this Visa can be extended.
5. Student Visa 5 years or the period of the course, whichever is less 3 entries per the academy year Admission proof in an Indian Institution along with letter of support from the guardian or parent. In addition to the above, applicants will also have to furnish a guarantee certificate from the bank regarding their financial standing. Yes, this Visa can be extended.
6. ‘X’ entry Visa for foreigners who are of Indian origin 5 years Multiple Entry Proof that the applicant is of Indian origin. Yes, this Visa can be extended.

List of Required Identification Papers:

Given below is the list of identification papers that are necessary to establish an individual’s identity as Bhutanese, Nepalese or a citizen of India in case they are entering Bhutan, Nepal or India by air.

For Indian Nationals:

  • A National Passport that is valid.
  • Photo ID card that has been provided by the Indian government or State government or Union Territory Administration to their employees/Voter ID card provided by the Election Commission of India.
  • Emergency Certificate that has been provided by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
  • Identity Certificate that has been provided by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
  • Individuals above the age of 65 or below the age of 15 will not have to provide approved documents of identity but will have to furnish a document with their photograph confirming their identity and age such as Driving License, CGHS Card, PAN Card and Ration Card and so on.
  • Children who are between the ages of 15 to 18 may be allowed to travel between Nepal/Bhutan and India based on the identity Certificate provided by their School Principal.

For Bhutanese/Nepalese Nationals:

  • Valid National Passport.
  • Certificate of Nepalese Citizenship (for Nepalese nationals).
  • Certificate of Bhutanese Citizenship (for Bhutanese nationals).
  • Voter Identification Card for Nepalese nationals that has been issued by the Election Commission of Nepal.
  • Voter Identification Card for Bhutanese nationals that has been issued by the Election Commission of Bhutan.
  • When necessary, individuals will have to provide a photo-identity certificate that is of limited validity. This document will have to be issued by the Royal Nepalese Mission in India.

  • For children between the ages of 10 to 18, a photo identity card provided by the Principal of their School is needed as long as parents have valid travel certificates and documents. For children (Bhutanese and Nepalese nationals) below the age of 10, such documents are not required.

Visa on Arrival (VOA) is one of the most common type of visa provided by most of the countries, and Malaysia also provides an opportunity to get VOA for the foreign nationals. With effect from 01 October 2015, Indian and Chinese nationals arriving from a third party country are eligible for VOA based on some categories.

Indian citizens do not require visa to visit Nepal, Bhutan and Mauritius. However, they need visas to enter countries like Argentina, Australia, Armenia, Egypt, France, New Zealand, Singapore, United States, and United Kingdom to name a few. Visa exemption refers to the process of entering country without having a visa .It is the same thing like visa free entry. Not all countries get visa free entry. Visa free entries allowed between two countries based on their mutual agreement. For example, certain commonwealth countries do not require tourist visas to enter to other commonwealth countries. Likewise, Nepal and India allow their citizens to enter, stay and work in both the countries without any visa as per the Indo-Nepal friendship treaty of 1951. Again, Indians don't visas to enter Bhutan and vice-versa.

Visa policies are country specific just as each country has different set of rules for issuing visas. The major reason behind the implementation of visas and adhering to different visa policies by different countries is to prevent illegal migration and ensure better security. Usually, a visa policy of a particular country include the following aspects – Visa free entry, Visa on arrivals, Visa in advance and E-Visa. In case, your old visa has expired and you need to apply for a new visa what you have to do is to start the application an afresh. You have to go through the entire application process every time you want to renew your visa or apply for a new one. In certain cases, the applicant need not go through the personal interview process again. However, the process of new visa application may differ from country to country.

  • Your passport should have at least 4 to 6 black pages. Your embassy might require those pages for sign. You can add more pages to your passport by informing the national passport processing office.
  • Make sure, your passport has a validity period of minimum 6 months. At the time of applying for visa, if your passport validity period is less than 6 months, you want request for renewal of your passport.
  • Fill up your visa application form with proper guidance so that you can avoid errors and prevent your application from being rejected.
  • Make sure you have copies of all the documents of visa application that you have sent to the embassy of the country where you are visiting.

  • Jalandhar records a rise in Visa applications by 66% in 2018; Chandigarh sees a growth of 54%

    According to reports, compared to 2017, visa applications in 2018 from Jalandhar grew by a whopping 66%. Chandigarh also recorded a growth of 54% compared to the previous year. 

    Vinay Malhotra, Regional Group Chief Operating Officer of VFS Global mentioned that the company processed a total of 52.8 lakh visa applications in 2018 from India. VFS Global manages passport and visa related tasks for the 48 countries.  

    Coming to the upward trend of visa applications in the country, after Punjab with 66% came Goa with 45% and then Puducherry with 43%. 

    The Head of Operations, North and East of VFS Global, Elizabeth Samuel mentioned that most of the visa applications in Punjab came from Chandigarh and Jalandhar. On a daily basis, around 2,000-3,000 applicants visit VFS Global for their visas as they are the only ones who service countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada and Australia.  

    Among all the countries abroad, Canada is said to be the most favoured destination for visas and recently there have been visa applications for countries such as Japan, Estonia, Czech Republic and Turkey.

  • New Delhi gets VFS Global’s Slovakia Visa Application Center

    VFS Global, the visa facilitation center has made it easier for Indian residents to apply for a visa for Slovakia. VFS Global has launched a visa Visa Application Centre (VAC) in the capital city of New Delhi.  The center was formally inaugurated by Ivan Lan?ari?, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic in New Delhi. It is the third VFS Global centers launched across India that provides Slovakia visa services. All three centres commenced accepting Slovakia visa applications in December 2018, prior to which applicants had to travel to New Delhi to submit their applications at the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in New Delhi.  

    There has been a rise in Slovakia visa applications in recent years, with the destination gaining popularity among Indian travellers across segments. There was a 68% increase in the visa applications for Slovakia in 2018 as compared to 2017. The Slovakia Visa Application Centers in India have been launched as part of the mandate signed on 5 November 2018, wherein the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic contracted VFS Global to provide visa services in 10 countries worldwide including Turkey, India, China, Kazakhstan, Palestine, Belarus, Russia, Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates, through a network of 38 Visa Application Centres.

  • South Africa announces scheme to make visa processing quicker; Malaysia, Thailand waive off visa fees

    In a bid to attract Indian tourists, countries like South Africa, Malaysia and Thailand have made certain changes when it comes to availing a visa. Recently the South African government announced a scheme that would make visa processing quicker. This is slated to be done with the consulate in Mumbai accrediting travel agents and tour operators to fast-track the process. It needs to be mentioned here that at present it takes about five to seven days while during the peak season the number of days taken to process the visa may be even longer. 

    South Asian countries Malaysia and Thailand, on the other hand, waived off the visa fees that needs to be paid while availing a visa. While the Malaysian government has waived off the visa fees for a 15-day single entry visa from this month, Thailand extended its free visa scheme till April. It is noteworthy to mention here that the Thailand government in the month of November had waived the fees required to be paid for visa-on-arrival for Indians and citizens of 20 countries until January.  

    Countries like Kenya, Greece, and Kazakhstan are also relaxing its visa norms to attract more tourists from India. Kenyan government allows children aged below 16 to get a free visa while Kazakhstan announced a 72-hour free visa for Indian tourists traveling via an Air Astana flight. The Greek tourism ministry is also working to make the visa process smoother for Indians.

  • 139 Indian pilgrims issued visa by Pakistan authorities

    On Sunday, the Pakistan High Commission issued 139 Indian pilgrims the Pakistani visa in a bid to enable them to visit Katas Raj Dham, the famous Shiva temple. It needs to be mentioned here that the temple is located in the country’s Punjab province. The visas were issued under the framework of a bilateral protocol on visits to religious shrines located in India and Pakistan.

    It is noteworthy to mention here that Pakistan had last month granted visas to more than 3,800 Sikh pilgrims for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Kartarpur corridor in Narowal. Apart from that, over 220 Indian pilgrims were granted visas earlier this month to visit the famous Hindu temple called Shadani Darbar in Sukkar.

    Pakistan’s High Commissioner Sohail Mahmood said that the issuance of visas to Indian pilgrims was in line with the government’s policy of promoting visits to religious shrines as well as a reflection of its commitment to faithfully implement the 1974 protocol. He added that Pakistan was committed to providing all possible facilitation for the visiting pilgrims and strengthen people-to-people exchanges among the countries.

The program of Visa will help integrate the payment solutions of these Fintechs with its own payment solution Visa Net faster.

    The fast track program has been created keeping in mind the needs of FinTech companies. The program reduces the number of onboard conditions required for them. The fast track program will help the companies decrease the fee levied for various processes and streamlining. Through this program the Fintech companies will also be able to access visa made platforms. The program was first launched in Europe in June and to Latin America in October.

  • Visa Inc. shares may rise by 13%

    The shares of Visa Inc. have risen by almost 27% this year despite suffering a setback in October. The shares could rise by another 13% as per the analysts which could be an all time high for the company. The rise in the shares of Visa Inc. in 2018 is 7 times more than the increase seen in shares of S&P 500. One of the most important factors that has attracted investors to invest in Visa is its low valuation.

    The average price target of Visa share has been set by the analysts at $163.25 when currently the stock price has been recorded at $144.40. If the increase in visa stock is compared from the month of July, it stands at 13%. The stock of the company is expected to grow further by 16% in the fiscal year of 2019. The rise in earnings and economic growth is expected to rise till the year 2021. In the future Visa as a company is set to grow because the expected increase in usage of debit and credit cards. The only obstacle in front of visa is the ageing bull market.

  • VFS states offering of priority visas to Indians may soon be taken up by other countries

    As per VFS Global Group which collects visa documents for 60 client governments in 139 countries, the high-spending Indian traveler is in great demand globally. Given this, the group believes that other countries might soon start offering priority visas, which is currently offered only by the UK in the country. The group stated that the places looking to offer priority visas to Indians include the Schengen states like Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy etc.

    Zubin Karkaria, the CEO of VFS Global Group stated that the UK started the service of super-priority visa a year back after recognizing that many Indian businessmen and investment bankers had to travel to the country on short notice. It needs to be mentioned that the UK which offers priority visas charge almost Rs.90,000 for ‘super priority’ category and Rs.20,000 for ‘priority’ category. Under the super-priority category, the visa decision comes in a day while under priority category the decision comes within a week. Karkaria, however, added that the countries looking to offer the service to Indians would do so for a lower charge.

    As per the group, India is witnessing a high double-digit growth when it comes to visa applications. Compared to 2016, visa applications from the country jumped to 50 lakh in 2017. According to Zubin Karkaria, the rise in the number of visa applications was due to foreign consulates reaching out to more and more Indians by having application centres across the country. He stated that though the overall growth in the number of visa applications in India was 10-15%, the growth recorded in Tier II and III cities is almost double ranging between 20-30%. He added that the growth during peak travel times was such that they had to keep their application centres in Delhi and Mumbai open on the weekends.

    Global Money Exchange has joined hands with BLS International, an Indian passport and visa service providing company to offer better services to Indian nationals with regards to visa and passport in Oman. Global Money Exchange which is one of the leading exchange houses in the country will offer the service through nine of its selected branches located in Salalah, Sur, Sohar, Shinas, Nizwa, Ibri, Duqm, Khasab and Buraimi. The branches will be accepting applications, related documents, and fees from Indian nationals for renewal of passports and passport applications for newborns. The applications, documents, and fees will be later sent to BLS International for processing at the Indian Embassy. The service was inaugurated on Sunday by P Kannan Nair, the second secretary of Consular Section, Indian Embassy located in Muscat.

  • Kolkata gets Israel Visa Application Centre

    With an aim to encourage more Indian travellers to visit Israel, the Embassy of Israel in India has opened a Kolkata Israel Visa Application Centre for West Bengal and North Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. The Kolkata Centre will also accept visa applications in the jurisdiction under the New Delhi centre. The visa application categories include B1 for employment, B2 for business, tourism, meeting or conference and A2 for students.

    Hassan Madah, Director, Israel Ministry of Tourism - India & Philippines said that the ministry has taken efforts to make it easier for travelers to complete application process for Israel visa. He further added that India has become one of the best-performing markets in Asia for Israel. The country has recorded a 6 month growth of 82% as compared to the same period in 2015. The residents of West Bengal and the aforementioned North Eastern states will no longer need to send their documents to the Embassy in New Delhi as they can submit the same in the Kolkata Centre. Israel recently announced a reduction in visa fees to INR 1,100 from its previous INR 1,700 charge for Indian citizens. In December last year, relaxed visa documentation was brought in for applicants who have availed visas of Schengen countries, US, Canada, Australia or Israel and have completed their travel to these destinations.

  • India signs revised travel agreement with Bangladesh

    A revised travel agreement was signed between India and Bangladesh in a bid to ease visa restrictions for Bangladeshi citizens who visit India.  The agreement was signed in Dhaka by the officials of both the countries in the presence of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan. The revised travel agreement will enable senior citizens and freedom fighters who took part in the 1971 Liberation war avail five-year multiple visas from India. It needs to be mentioned here that Rajnath Singh is on a three-day visit to the country. He had held the 6th Home Minister-Level talks between India and Bangladesh with Asaduzzaman Khan on the first day of his visit and is expected to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to discuss bilateral issues.
