Shoppers across India will rejoice, as the Reserve Bank of India has instructed banks to recheck and reduce the interest rates levied on outstanding credit card balances. This mandate from the RBI is a move to ensure that there is fairness and transparency with respect to credit card finances. Additionally this measure also comes as a respite for credit card customers paying interest rates as high as 42% per annum for failed and late payments. The RBI also issued another directive to banks to put a ‘zero liability’ policy in place for fraud victims, in situations where negligence is not the key reason for fraud.
The Reserve Bank stated that the Indian Bank’s Association will set forth detailed operational guidelines for banks in both regards to make it convenient for banking customers. As far as internet fraud is concerned, RBI said that the bank needs to address the problem faced by a fraud victim and determine whether the fraud happened due to customer negligence. In cases where the bank is unable to do so, then the customer should be given the benefit of doubt and a refund process should be put into place.
