Every credit card is secured with a 4-digit chip and PIN system. This system makes transactions that are made using this card safe and secure. In fact, this system plays a significant role while withdrawing money from ATMs also. By definition, it a 4-digit unique identification number that is assigned to a particular card of a user. While using the card, the cardholder needs to enter the PIN. The payment system matches the PIN and the user ID before giving permission to the customer to make any transaction. It is a measure that is taken by the banks to secure one's credit card. Hence, the PIN should not be shared with anybody.
Credit card activation is another important step in using your credit card for the first time. Most of the banks or card issuers, send a new credit card in active state. However, only when you generate the PIN, you can start using your credit card.
Earlier, when banks used to generate credit card PINs, there used to be a separate card activation process. But now with the introduction of green PIN and self-PIN generation, cards are being sent in active state.
Therefore, once you receive the new credit card, try any one of the above-mentioned methods to generate the PIN and use your card for PIN-required transaction such as ATM withdrawal, POS transaction, etc. Once you use your credit card for the first time, your card gets activated automatically.
If you find any difficulty in using your card with the new PIN and when you're sure of using the correct PIN, call the respective credit card customer care and report the issue.
The concerned team would help you activate your credit card.
Banks provide the cardholders with the PIN of their credit card in the welcome kit. However, banks insist that the cardholders change the PIN once they receive the kit by going to an ATM. The PIN should be kept confidential under every circumstance.

As per Reserve Bank of India reports, all magnetic strip based debit and credit cards will stop working at the turn of the new year. This is because all cards powered by a magnetic strip will be disabled on 31st December 2018.
From the 1st of January, only EMV chips and PIN-based cards will be valid and the same will be in circulation for any new cards offered by banks.
EMV, or Euro Mastercard Visa cards, ideally require a pin at the time of completing a transaction on a PoS. On the other hand, a magnetic strip card does not require any pin.
An RBI data from August 2018 suggest that India has over 4.1 crore credit cards and 98.01 crore debit cards. The interesting part here is that transactions on credit cards match the transaction amounts where a debit card is involved.
While credit card transactions stood at Rs.47,981 crore, debit card transactions amounted to Rs.48,971 crore. Following the RBI’s directive, SBI has already sent notices to its customer base which has over 30.7 crore debit cards. The bank has said that the conversion is supposed to happen within the end of December 2018 and that it is absolutely free of cost.
