It is important you maintain a very good credit score preferably around 750 if you wish to apply for a credit card for international travel. Having a good credit score also makes it easier for the bank to approve your credit card application.
If you do not pay your credit card bills on time, then your credit score will fall making it difficult for you to apply for a loan or credit card in future. If you fail to pay your bill on time, then the bank will also impose a penalty on your outstanding amount.
You can apply for a credit card for international travel online by visiting the said bank’s official website where they can click on the apply now button and fill the application form and submit the documents to complete the application process. You can also visit the nearest bank branch along with all the documents to apply for a credit card.
Some banks do not charge annual fee if you are able to make a minimum annual spend using your credit card.
Whether you can apply for a credit card for international travel from an Indian bank as an NRI is completely at the discretion of the bank. However, there are banks in India such as Axis Bank who do allow NRIs to apply for their credit card for international travel.
The Indian government has consulted with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to change the Foreign Exchange Management (Current Account Transaction) Rules by including credit card transactions in the $250,000 Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LBS) limit. Any transfers or purchases made outside of this cap must first receive advance RBI approval. Previously, the LRS ceiling did not apply to credit card spending.
