News About Holidays in Punjab

  • Election Commision Announces Holiday on Polling Day in Punjab

    The Election Commision of India (EC) has declared holiday on polling day in Punjab which goes to poll on 19 May 2019, the last day of polling for the Lok Sabha general elections in the state. The holiday was declared to facilitate voters to exercise their vote. Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab S Karuna Raju said that as per the Representation of People Act 1951 section 135B and according to the instruction issued by the election commission, employees of commercial and industrial establishment can have a paid holiday on polling day in Punjab on 19 May. The Government of Punjab also issued directions to make sure that the compliance of guidelines of the election commission concerning the dry day on the polling day of the parliamentary constituency. Sale of liquor will be prohibited in Punjab 48 hours prior to the day of polling and ending with the conclusion of polling at 6:00 pm on 19 May. Directions by the Chief Electoral Officer have been issued to Administrative Secretary, Finance Commissioner, Director General of Police, Additional Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Divisional Commissioner, Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Heads of Departments. Thirteen Lok Sabha seats in the state of Punjab will go to polls in the 7th and the last phase of the Lok Sabha election on 19 May 2019. The counting of votes has been scheduled and will be announced on 23 May 2019.

  • Under the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881, the State Government of Punjab declares holiday today on account of Valmiki Jayanti

    On account of Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti, the State Government of Punjab declared public holiday today under the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881. The holiday has been announced as per the section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881 and under the continuity of Notification (6/7/2017-2PP3/599-600) and the number of Notification (20-25/26/Pub.1).
