News About Holidays in Assam

  • 44 organisations have called a state-wide bandh in Assam on 23 October to fight against the Citizenship Bill 2016

A state-wide bandh has been called by 44 organisations in Assam on Tuesday, 23 October 2018, to not to support the Citizenship Bill 2016 and the November 2017 convention, which has been organised by the communities representing the Hindus from West Bengal to express their support to the bill. The meeting of 44 organisations was held on Saturday, 19 October 2018, under the leadership of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and it was decided to announce the state-wide bandh on Tuesday.

Akhil Gogoi, a leader of KMSS, said, “The Assam Bandh has been declared for the first time under the flagship our organisations to fight against the Centre that is planning to implement the Citizenship Bill 2016. The State Government should not support the rally planned on 17 November by the organisations for Bengali Hindus.”

The bill proposes to grant the citizens to unlawful Hindu migrants, Sikh migrants, Buddhist migrants, Paris migrants and Christian migrants from the neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The identity of the local communities in Assam gets impacted if the bill is passed. An applicant should have resided in the country for the last one year and for eleven of the last fourteen years. However, the Citizenship Bill is relaxing it to 6 years.
