A brief description of June Holidays 2020

  • Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti: The festival commemorates the birthday of Sant Kabir, a mystic poet and saint. The day is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month Jyeshtha.
  • YMA Day: The holiday marks the establishment of the Young Mizo Association (YMA). It is the largest non-profit, secular, and non-governmental organisation of the Mizo people. On the occasion, various social activities like planting of saplings, cleaning villages, constructing houses for the poor, etc. are carried out in the state of Mizoram.
  • Raja Sankranti: The day is observed on the first day of the month of Asara. It welcomes the agricultural year in the state. All agricultural operations are stopped for a period of three days due to the festival.
  • Ratha Yatra: Ratha Yatra, a Hindu festival is celebrated on the second day in the bright fortnight of Ashadha month. The festival commemorates Lord Jagannath’s visit to Gundhicha temple via Mausi Maa temple. As part of the festival, the deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are taken out in a procession on three decorated chariots, which are pulled through the streets by hundreds of devotees.

    • Remna Ni: Remna Ni commemorates the signing of the historic peace accord between Mizo National Front and the central government. The signing of the accord brought an end to the 20-year insurgency in the state.

  • Karnataka Declares 3-Day Mourning for Girish Karnad

    Karnataka has declared a holiday for schools, colleges and government offices on Monday and a 3-day mourning till Wednesday for Jnanpith awardee, multi-lingual actor and noted writer Girish Karnad, who died here today. The official of the Chief Minister’s office of Karnataka said that the state government has declared a holiday today and a 3-day mourning till 12 June 2019 as a mark of respect to Girish Karnad. With the holiday declared, the proposed cabinet expansion is likely to be postponed to a later date due. Girish Karnad, 81, died at his residence in the city centre earlier in the day due to multi-organ failure.
