YMA Day commemorates the establishment of the largest non-profit, secular, and non-governmental organisation of the Mizo people in the Indian state of Mizoram. The Young Mizo Association (Y.M.A.) was founded by the Welsh Christian missionaries. The Mizo leaders thought of a proposal on 3rd June at the residence of Kattie Hughes to unite all the Mizo people, and they proposed the formation of the Young Mizo Christian Association. Reverend David Edward gave the name ‘Young Lushai Associations’, and the organization was inaugurated on 15 June 1935. The name was changed to ‘Young Mizo Association’ on 7th October 1947 and is adjoined by other states such as Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. The organisation has 2.5 lakh members and over 700 branches across Mizoram and other adjoining states.
