Important Notes
Germany has announced an increase in its annual skilled worker visa quota for Indian professionals, raising the cap from 20,000 to 90,000 in a move to strengthen bilateral ties with India. The announcement came during German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where both leaders underscored cooperation in economic growth, defence, and clean energy. Chancellor Scholz welcomed the decision as a positive step. This expanded visa programme builds on a migration agreement established two years ago to promote professional and academic exchange. Germany also committed to streamlining its visa process and improving recognition of Indian qualifications.
This marks Scholz's third visit to India since 2023. Discussions covered areas of shared interest, with India's Ministry of External Affairs noting growth in the partnership. Defence collaboration is also advancing, highlighted by a recent 'maritime partnership exercise' in the Indian Ocean to enhance naval coordination. The leaders also discussed India's green hydrogen initiatives, culminating in a new 'Green Hydrogen Road Map' agreement to support Germany's energy shift amidst reduced Russian energy imports.
