Investment Options for Portugal Golden Visa

You can avail any one of the options mentioned below to get a Golden Visa to Portugal:

  • Real estate investment is no longer a qualifying route for the Portugal Golden Visa. Portugal eliminated real estate as an eligible investment category for its Golden Visa (ARI) programme effective October 2023. Please refer to the current ARI programme guidelines on the official AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) website for current qualifying investment options.
  • Investment in a qualifying Investment Fund: minimum €500,000 in a fund regulated by the Portuguese CMVM (AIMA). Note: bank deposit investments are no longer a qualifying route. Please verify current qualifying investment options at the official AIMA website (aima.gov.pt) as of May 2026.
  • You can purchase shares of a company worth at least €1 million.
  • You can make an investment worth minimum of €1 million in a company in Portugal.
  • You can create employment opportunities for at least ten Portuguese citizens.
  • You can create a commercial company in which you have invested at least €500,000 and also created at least five full-time employment opportunities. Alternatively, invest a minimum of €500,000 for research purposes related to science and technology. Please verify current qualifying investment thresholds and categories at the official AIMA website (aima.gov.pt), as the Portugal Golden Visa programme was significantly reformed in October 2023.

  • Invest a minimum of €250,000 for the promotion of art and Portuguese national heritage.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You must not have any criminal record.
  • You must invest a significant amount which will be helpful to the economy of Portugal.
  • You must be aged 18 years and above.
  • The money that you will invest should belong to you.
  • You will have to make commitment of making investment in Portugal for a minimum of five years.

Benefits of Golden Visa for Portugal

  • You can include your family members consisting of your spouse, children aged below 18 years, parents, siblings, and children dependent on you on the visa.
  • You and the members of your family can travel to any Schengen zone countries without the requirement of having visa for up to 90 days.
  • You will not be required to stay in Portugal to renew your visa. The number of days that you will have to spend in the country for renewal purposes is seven days annually.
  • You and the member of your family can choose to stay in Portugal permanently as long as your visa is active and avail the benefits offered including healthcare.
  • You can choose to apply for a Portugal passport after five years.

How to Apply for a Portugal Golden Visa

  • Visit the official AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) website at https://aima.gov.pt for the current Golden Visa (ARI) application process. Note: The old SEF (Foreigners and Borders Service) was replaced by AIMA in October 2023, and the SEF portal is no longer active.
  • Register yourself and upload the relevant documents in the PDF format.
  • Pay the registration fee.
  • Once you get a confirmation from SEF, you can schedule an appointment to submit your Golden Visa application.

Documents Required

  • Portugal visa application form
  • Passport
  • Two passport size photographs of the applicant
  • Proof that you do not have any criminal record in your name
  • Submit a proof of you having purchased a valid health insurance
  • A statement where you have sworn to make investment for at least five years
  • Payment receipt provided by the ARI
  • Any investment related documents

You will have to stay a minimum of seven days in a calendar year in Portugal to enjoy the benefits of the Portugal Golden Visa. The validity of your visa will be for one year post which you can continue to renew it for a period of two years. After five years, you can apply for permanent citizenship or residency in Portugal.
