Martyrdom Day of Shaheed Udham Singh

Shaheed Udham Singh is best known for the assassination of Michael O' Dwyer as a retaliation to Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. He was martyred on 31 July 1940 and since then the day is observed as Martyrdom Day of Shaheed Udham Singh.

Udham Singh's Early Life

Udham Singh was born on 26 December 1899. The father's name of Udham Singh was Tahal Singh, who was a watchman in Uppal village. Singh lost his parents when he was just 7 years old. He also lost his brother in the year 1917.

Udham Singh as a Revolutionary and Freedom Fighter

Udham Singh became a revolutionary at an early stage of life and toured several countries to serve the purpose of his life. He travelled to Nairobi in the year 1921 and Africa in the year 1920 and came back to India in the year 1924. Singh spent several years in revolutionary activities.

Udham Singh Shot Michael O'Dwyer

A 40-year-old Indian man featured himself like an Englishman, pulled out a revolver and fired 6 rounds into a gathering. O'Dwyer was shot twice and died on the spot. Udham Singh then fired Lord Zetland and was seriously injured. Udham Singh did not try escaping from the crowd and was arrested on the spot immediately. This event occurred on 13 March 1940.
