A number of holidays are observed in the northeastern states of the country. Many of these holidays are dedicated to tribal leaders who fought against the British. One among them was U Tirot Sing.
U Tirot Sing fought against the British in April 1829. The attack to drive the British out of the Khasi Hills led to the Anglo-Khasi War. The war lasted for about four years. Even though the Khasi were outnumbered and ill-equipped, the bravery of the men helped in fighting the British for four years. Tirot Sing was captured by the British and passed away on 17 July 1835 in jail at Dhaka. The U Tirot Sing Memorial is located at Mairang Town and wreaths are placed there on 17 July of every year.
Among the several religious and tribal festivals celebrated in the northeastern states of India, there is a sequence of holidays honouring brave native tribal chiefs who opposed British control of their territory in the nineteenth century. U Tirot Sing was one of the most accomplished of these freedom fighters. In 1826, the British took control of the Brahmaputra Valley. They sought to build a road across the Khasi Hills to connect the valley with the Surma Valley, which they also held. David Scott, representing the British, contacted Tirot Sing, the Khasi chief, for permission to build the road, promising him control of his province and unfettered trade. Sing was suspicious of the British's true intentions and was disturbed to learn that they had been increasing their garrisons in the region. U Tirot Sing then issued a notice to the British to leave the area, which they promptly ignored.
Tirot Sing determined to expel the British from the Khasi hills, and in April 1829, hundreds of his soldiers attacked a British outpost, sparking the four-year Anglo-Khasi War. Given that the Khasi were ill-equipped and heavily outnumbered, Tirot Sing and his men's valour in mounting a four-year struggle is impressive. Tirot Sing was eventually arrested by the British and sent to Dhaka, where he died in prison on July 17, 1835. Every year on his death anniversary, wreaths are placed at the U Tirot Singh Memorial in Mairang.
"It is better to die an independent king than to reign as a vassal." U Tirot Sing, who made the decision to defy the might of the British and devoted his life to protect the independence of his territory, is credited with saying these famous words.
U Tirot Sing Day is celebrated on 17 June.
The only weapons the Khasis had throughout the Anglo-Khasi War were swords, shields, bows, and arrows. As a result, they turned to guerrilla warfare, which lasted for around four years. Tirot Sing had to shelter in a cave after being shot at by the British.
Tirot Sing was the last Khasi king.
Tirot Sing died 187 years ago.
