Visa Bulletin

The Visa Bulletin is a monthly publication that is issued by the U.S. Department of State. This publication provides important information about the availability of immigrant visa numbers. It is mainly used by people who apply for family-sponsored or employment-based (EB) permanent residency (green cards) to check out when they can move forward in the immigration process.

The bulletin shows priority dates and cut-off dates for different visa categories and countries. By checking the Visa Bulletin each month, applicants and employers can track progress, estimate waiting times, and know when it is possible to file applications or receive final approval. Some categories and countries (like India and China) have too many applicants, therefore the waiting time becomes longer because the availability of fewer visas.

Important Key Terms of Visa Bulletin

  • Priority Date: This is the date when you first file your immigration petition with USCIS or the Department of Labor. It is the starting point of your green card process and shows your place in line.
  • Cutoff Date: The cutoff date is the date listed in the Visa Bulletin for each visa category and country. It sets the limit for how many people can move forward based on visa availability. If your priority date is earlier than the cutoff date, then you are eligible to move forward.
  •  Dates for Filing: This provides you the information about the submission of your green card application or required documents. If your priority date is before this date, you can submit your application, even if the green card is not fully ready yet.
  • Final Action Date: This date shows when a green card can be issued to you. Even after you file your application, approval cannot happen until your priority date is earlier than the final action date. This confirms that a visa number is available for your case.
