HDFC Bank’s surprise move – Cut in its ATM network
HDFC Bank, country’s second biggest private bank, has rationalized the number of ATMs by 276 in the previous quarter (July to September) from the total number 11,686. The bank attributes this to shift in client behavior and their shift to digital banking (internet and mobile banking). Cost of running an ATM is not trivial including manning the kiosk. This is not to say that it is not averse to adding ATMs in required locations as they still continue to do so. ATMs in certain regions are being removed due to other parameters based on transaction frequency, feedbacks from relevant branches among others. With more and more folks happily using their credit and debit cards from the comfort of their homes and offices, it has effectively brought down the number of banking via ATMs. The use of digital payment apps such as Chillar, Paytm, PayZapp etc. have also contributed to this trend.
