What is Aadhaar Card?

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues a unique 12-digit identification number also known as Aadhaar card to Indian residents. It is an important document which securely links biometric data such as iris scans, fingerprints, and photographs with demographic details to provide a single proof of identity and address for residents of India.

The Aadhaar program was launched in 2009 by UIDAI to streamline the delivery of government services and subsidies. Aadhaar is widely accepted as proof of identity and address across India. Additionally, it is mandatory to link your Aadhaar with your PAN card when filing Income Tax Returns as per government regulations.

Eligibility Criteria to Apply for Aadhaar Card:

All the residents of India are eligible to apply for Aadhaar card, irrespective of their age and gender. Read on to know more about it:

  1. The applicant should be a residing in India.

  1. Foreign nationals may also apply for an Aadhaar card if they are residing in India under eligible visa categories, allowing temporary use of Aadhaar to access specific services.

Aadhaar Card for Indians

Indians residing in India can apply for Aadhaar. However, as per the rule by the Government of India, it is now mandatory to link your Aadhaar with your PAN so as to file your income tax returns.

Aadhaar Card for Minors

Minors or citizens of India below the age of 18 years can also apply for an Aadhaar. However, the details of the parents of the child including their identity and address proof are to be provided. Newborn babies can also apply for Aadhaar; however, they will have to get their biometrics updated as soon as they turn five years and 15 years old.

How to Enroll for Aadhaar?

The Aadhaar application process can be done from any authorised Aadhar Enrolment Centre/Permanent Enrolment Centre. You can find an updated list of existing Aadhaar Enrolment Centres on the UIDAI website.

In an effort to simplify the enrolment process, the UIDAI has also authorised over 10,000 post offices and bank branches to operate as Permanent Enrolment Centres.

Applicants can follow the Procedure Listed below to Complete the Enrolment Process:

Step 1 - Visit the official website of Aadhaar to find an Aadhaar enrolment centre

Step 2 - Enter the required details to fill in the form

Step 3 - Submit the required documents.

Step 4 - The applicant needs to provide their biometrics (fingerprint and iris scan).

Step 5 - The applicant needs to obtain the enrolment acknowledgement slip

Step 6 - The applicant will receive their Aadhaar card at the registered address.

How to Enroll for Baal-Aadhaar

The following are the steps to enrol for Baal Aadhar:

Step 1 - Visit the UIDAI website to find the nearest enrolment center

Step 2 - Visit the enrolment center with a copy of the child’s birth certificate.

Step 3 - The Aadhaar number of one of the child’s parents must be provided compulsorily for authentication and Baal Aadhaar will be linked to the parents Aadhaar.

Step 4 - All relevant details and a mobile number that the applicant wishes to register with Baal Adhaar must be filled in on the Baal Aadhaar application form.

Step 5 - A photograph of the child or minor will be taken, and no biometric will be recorded if the child is below five years of age.

Step 6 - Collect the acknowledgment slip, after completing the above steps.

Step 7 - Baal Aadhaar will be dispatched to the designated address, after verification SMS is sent to the mobile number as mentioned in the application form.

How to Update Aadhaar?

Aadhar Card Update can be done through two main sources, such as via enrolment center or through online mode. Here are the two main purpose of updating Aadhaar:

Applicants can update address through online mode, while other demographic data along with biometric data can be updated by visiting the enrolment center only

How to Check the Status of Aadhaar Card Application?

Follow the steps given below to check the status of your Aadhaar card application:

Step 1: You need to visit the official UIDAI website.

Step 2: Login to the portal using the credentials

Step 3: Navigate to ‘My Aadhaar’ section and click on ‘Check Aadhaar Status

Step 4: Enter enrolment number and time of enrolment

Step 5: Click on ‘Check Status’ after entering the captcha verification code.

The status of your Aadhaar card application will be displayed on the screen.

How to Download/Print Aadhaar Card?

If you have enrolled for an Aadhaar card but haven’t received the physical copy yet, you can easily download Aadhaar Card and print the e-Aadhaar (PDF version) from the official Aadhaar website. This digital version is valid and accepted everywhere.

You can also get your updated Aadhaar card using options like your Date of Birth, Virtual ID, m-Aadhaar App, DigiLocker, or the UMANG App.

How to Complete Aadhaar Card Verification Process?

Follow the steps given below to complete the Aadhaar card verification process:

Step 1: You need to visit the official UIDAI website.

Step 2: Navigate to the ‘My Aadhaar’ section.

Step 3: You need to click on ‘Verify an Aadhaar Number’. The option can be found under the ‘Aadhaar Services’ section.

Step 4: Enter the Aadhaar number and captcha.

Step 5: Click on ‘Proceed and Verify Aadhaar’.

Step 6: Follow the steps on the next page to complete the process.

You can reach UIDAI on the toll-free number 1947 for rectification, in case there is a mismatch in detail.

The government has made it compulsory to link Aadhaar with PAN by 30th June 2023. Those who missed the deadline can still link it by paying a late fee of Rs.1,000. After making the payment, you can link your Aadhaar card and PAN card by following one of the methods given below:

What is e-Aadhaar?

The e-Aadhaar is an electronic copy of your Aadhar card and can be used in lieu of a physical copy of the card. It is accepted universally and can be downloaded from the UIDAI website. The eAadhaar is saved in a PDF format and is password protected. You can also choose to download a masked copy of your Aadhaar, which will hide your Aadhaar number.

What is mAdhaar?

With a view to making the Aadhaar card and its allied services more universally available, UIDAI has released mAadhaar which is a mobile application for Android devices. The app contains the user's Aadhaar information in a digitized form and enables accessibility on the go. Users can add up to 3 profiles on their app and perform a wide variety of services such as locking their biometrics and accessing their e-KYC for Aadhaar.

What is Aadhaar Virtual ID?

Aadhaar Virtual ID is a temporary code consisting of a 16-digit number which is the alternative to the Aadhaar number generated against an Aadhaar number. The virtual ID cannot be used to retrieve the original Aadhaar card under any circumstances. Applicants can generate only one virtual ID generated against an Aadhaar number that can be generated as many times as the applicants wants.

What is Aadhaar PVC Card?

UIDAI introduced a new form of Aadhaar called the Aadhaar PVC Card. Apart from being durable and easy to carry, the new PVC card comes with several security features. You can order the PVC Aadhaar Card online by using the Aadhaar number, Enrolment ID, or Virtual ID. Rs.50 will be charged to apply for the Aadhaar PVC Card. The new card will be sent via speed post to the registered address.

  • I would like to update my name on the Aadhaar. Can I update it online through the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP)?

    No, only addresses can be updated through the SSUP. For updating name, date of birth, photograph, mobile number etc., you will have to visit a Permanent Enrolment Centre and update the details.

  • My first Aadhaar application was rejected, can I re-apply?

    Usually an Aadhaar application is rejected due to technical/quality reasons. You are permitted to reapply for your Aadhaar.

  • Are NRIs allowed to apply for an Aadhaar card?

    Yes, NRIs holding a valid Indian passport can apply for an Aadhaar card.

  • Can I enrol for Aadhaar simply by mailing in the necessary documents?

UIDAI: Mandatory Aadhaar Update for Children Turning 15 Years

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), biometric upgrades are required once a child turns five. The card only functions with an address, name, and photo because iris scans and fingerprints were not created at that age. Baal Aadhaar, a blue-printed Aadhaar card, is given to children under the age of five. According to reports, around 17 crore Aadhaar upgrades for children are still due in India. Parents are required to pay a charge (currently Rs. 100) in the event that a biometric update is not received.

More than Seven Crore Children to Get Aadhaar Updates

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will start a nationwide drive in the next 45-60 days to update Aadhaar biometrics for children, beginning with schools and later covering colleges. UIDAI is also sending SMS reminders to registered mobile numbers. Children who are below the age of five will get Aadhaar without biometrics. Once they turn five, updating fingerprints, iris scans, and photos will be mandatory before age seven to avoid Aadhaar deactivation. The completion of the updates after the age of seven will incur a fee of Rs.100 and it can be done at Aadhaar centers.

Indian Railways Introduces Aadhaar-Based Tatkal Booking from July 2025

Indian Railways is set to bring new rules for Tatkal ticket booking from July 2025. These rules aim to stop misuse and give a fair chance to regular passengers. From 1 July 2025, passengers must complete their Aadhaar verification before booking Tatkal train tickets on the IRCTC website or app. Moreover, from 15 July 2025, an OTP verification using the Aadhaar-linked mobile number will also be required for all Tatkal bookings. To make the system even fairer, authorised agents will not be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window—10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for AC tickets and 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for non-AC tickets.

The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has announced an Aadhaar revamp to enhance the user experience. The major changes include the implementation of a QR-code-based application that allows users to easily share their Aadhaar details digitally. Users can share Aadhaar card in either masked or complete forms. Updation of personal details on the Aadhaar card, except biometric, is also set to be automated, by integrating various official databases. This simplifies the process for applying or updating Aadhaar details.

UIDAI Advances Digital Verification with QR Code Feature in New Aadhaar App

Aadhaar holders would be able to electronically reveal their identity in the coming weeks rather than supplying photocopies. A TOI article claims that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will release a new mobile app that will allow users to communicate a whole document using QR code. In the safety of their own homes, UIDAI will launch a system that enables users to modify their name, birthday, address, and phone number. By November, there will be no in-person requirements other than providing fingerprints and iris scans at an enrollment center. It aims to decrease the chance of fake paperwork and speed up the process for citizens. Among the documents from which UIDAI directly gathers its data are passports, driver's licenses, birth certificates, PANs, PDSs, and MNREGAs. The QR-code method is prepared for use in identity verification on trains, real estate transactions, and hotel check-ins.

Free Aadhaar Document Updates Will Be Valid Until 14 June 2026: UIDAI

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), you can continue to upload your Aadhaar verification documents online for free until 14 June 2026 on the myAadhaar portal. This is helpful for individuals who have either not updated their particulars or whose Aadhaar had been issued more than 10 years ago. If you wish to update your biometric, telephone number, or email, then you must visit an Aadhaar center and pay an applicable fee for those updates.

Tatkal Ticket Booking Rules from July 2025

Starting from 1 July 2025, only those who have successfully authenticated with Aadhaar will be able to access Tatkal tickets purchased through IRCTC's official website and mobile app. To book Tatkal tickets online, customers must properly link their Aadhaar number with their IRCTC user profile. All Tatkal tickets purchased through authorized railway agents and at computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters would need an additional layer of verification through OTP (One-Time Password) authentication as of 15 July 2025. The new regulation prohibits authorized agents from making Tatkal ticket reservations during the first 30 minutes of the booking window on the day that Tatkal reservations open. Agents are unable to reserve tickets for AC classes between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and for non-AC sessions between 11:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Aadhaar Mandatory for Tatkal Train Tickets Now

To book train tickets under the tatkal quota, customers must link their Aadhaar numbers with their login IDs, according to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Only 12 million of the more than 130 million active customers on the IRCTC platform have Aadhaar-verified accounts. The internet portal is used to book about 225,000 Tatkal tickets every day, and within the first ten minutes of the booking process starting, 66.4% of the tickets are sold. Approximately 84.02% of Tatkal tickets are sold in the first hour after the window opens, with the remaining 12% being bought 8–10 hours later.

Aadhaar Authentications Reach 2,707 Crore in 2024-2025

Aadhaar authentication transactions hit 2,707 crore in 2024-2025, indicating a significant increase compared to last year. In March alone, 247 crore transactions occurred, showing the rising usage of the Aadhaar verification system. 20 lakh new Aadhaar numbers were generated in March this year, and more than 1.91 crore Aadhaar numbers were updated, according to the official release.

NMC Makes Aadhaar-Based Attendance Mandatory to Stop Fake Faculty in Medical Colleges

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that all medical college teachers in India must mark their attendance by using the Aadhaar-based facial recognition app from 1 May 2025. This step is being taken to stop the problem of fake teachers who are shown on paper but do not actually work at the college. This app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Teachers will have to mark their attendance daily through this app, which uses facial recognition linked to their Aadhaar number. Colleges are required to help their staff in setting up and using the app properly before 1 May 2025.

Currently, the app is in testing phase and available to small group of users who took part in the Aadhaar Samvaad event. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed officials to link Aadhaar numbers with electoral roll data, according to a circular issued to all Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) across states and Union Territories. The voter roll data should be integrated with Aadhaar and mobile numbers to ensure accurate identification of electors. This measure aims to eliminate instances where a single elector holds multiple Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers.
