  • NRIs with valid passports can now apply for Aadhaar

Non-Resident Indians can now apply for an Aadhaar card if they hold a valid Indian passport. This also includes Indian expats living in the Gulf region or the UAE. Earlier, the Aadhaar was only available to Indians residing in India. The earlier mandatory criteria of 180-day stay in India has been removed. A gazette notification was issued in this regard. A valid Indian passport will be accepted as proof of address, proof of identity, and date of birth.

If there is no valid Indian address listed on the passport, then any other document that is approved by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will be accepted as address proof. A revised enrolment form has been issued for this which has a modified declaration specifically for NRIs. NRIs can book an appointment at an Aadhaar enrolment centre through the UIDAI’s official website. Once the application, passport copy, and other documents have been submitted, they will be enrolled in the registry. They will then receive the Aadhaar letter that contains the 12-digit Aadhaar number. This will be sent to the postal address that was submitted during the application process.
