No new ration cards in Delhi – thousands in waiting list
The National Food Security Act of 2013 was implemented with the idea of providing ration at cheap rates to individuals from poor backgrounds. Thousands of families have benefitted under this scheme, utilising their ration cards to get food grains at subsidised prices. According to recent reports, close to 30,000 families are yet to be enrolled under the scheme in Delhi, as the threshold for the city has exceeded the limit. While the current threshold is 72.8 lakh people, close to 72.91 lakh people have applied for ration cards.
The major problem lies with the software, which locks once the threshold is reached. Previously, ration cards were not provided as the government insisted on individuals to have an Aadhar to process the application. While most of the applicants now have their Aadhar cards, this threshold has prevented them from getting their ration cards. The government aims to delete bogus entries from the list to accommodate these requests.
