An e-Aadhaar is an electronic version of the physical Aadhaar that is digitally signed by the UIDAI as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The Act allows the legal recognition of electronically transmitted documents with a digital signature.

Key Features of e-Aadhaar card:

  • Valid document: The e-Aadhaar card that has been downloaded is recognised as a legally valid document. In fact, the electronic version should be treated on par with the printed version.
  • Accepted as ID proof: This type of Aadhaar card is accepted as proof of identity for any purpose.

To put it simply, an e-Aadhaar card is nothing but a digitised version of the 12-digit Aadhaar card. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers users the facility to download e-Aadhaar on its official website. The downloaded electronic card will have the same information that is printed on the physical card such as name, address, photo, gender, date of birth details, etc.
