Considering the privacy of the personal data including the demographic and biometric information mentioned on the Aadhaar card, UIDAI has recently decided to come up with a unique feature, termed as Aadhaar Virtual ID.
The Aadhaar Virtual ID offers limited KYC access providing only that much information which is required for verification rather than offering complete details of an individual’s Aadhaar card.
What is Aadhaar Virtual ID?
The Aadhaar Virtual ID consists of 16-digit random numbers that is mapped to an individual’s Aadhaar card at the back end. An Aadhaar card holder using the virtual ID need not submit his Aadhaar number every time for verification purpose, instead he can generate a Virtual ID and use it for various verification purposes like mobile number, bank and other financial documents.
The Aadhaar Virtual ID gives access to the biometric information of an Aadhaar card holder along with the basic details like name, address and photograph that are sufficient for the e-KYC. Unlike in the past, the agency will not know the 12-digit Aadhaar number and other personal details.
How to Generate Aadhaar Virtual ID?
All the Aadhaar card holders can avail the Aadhaar Virtual ID by visiting the UIDAI’s website. The 16 -digit number will be valid for a certain period of time. Below mentioned are the 9 simple steps that will guide you on how to generate an Aadhaar Virtual ID easily.
Step 1: Visit the official Aadhaar Virtual ID website: https://resident.uidai.gov.in/web/resident/vidgeneration
Step 2: Enter your Aadhaar number in the box provided and type in the security code.
Step 3: Click on “Send OTP”, after which you will receive the OTP on your registered number.

- Virtual ID is revocable so chances of duplication is negligible.

Yes. You can use your Virtual ID instead of your Aadhaar number to authenticate API input/e-KYC services. Earlier this year, by 31 May 2019, many entities were set to accept VID for authentication.
Retrieving a VID means to obtain a VID previously set by you. Regenerating a VID refers to setting up a new VID, invalidating the old one.
There are multiple ways to get a VID. You can retrieve your old VID or even generate a new one. The easiest way to retrieve your VID is by sending an SMS to the Aadhaar helpline. You will have to enter “RVIDLast 4 digits of Aadhaar Number” and send this message through your registered mobile number to 1947. You can also obtain your VID through UIDAI’s resident portal.
The first VID that you receive has a minimum validity period of 1 calendar day. After this if you regenerate your VID, the old one will be deactivated and the regenerated one will become your new VID. In the future, if/when you try to retrieve your VID, the recent VID (last active VID) will be sent to you.
No. Only you can generate your Virtual ID.
