History of Puducherry Liberation Day

While India gained independence from British rule on 15th August 1947, there were certain regions which still remained under European control. The French had control over Puducherry while the Portuguese controlled Goa. The French transferred the territories under its control to India on 1st of November 1954. Given this fact, Puducherry celebrates liberation day. It must be noted here that the state legally merged with the Republic of India on 16 August 1962.
