Traditions of Yaosang
The Meitei people, Manipur’s biggest ethnic group, observe Yaosang. Yaosang and Holi fall on the same day and are very similar, like the lighting of fire the night before.
Yaosang has been celebrated for three centuries and is developed from a tribal agricultural celebration to include Hindu cultures. Donations are provided by the locals to conduct the festivities.
The Thabal Chongba dance is the main attraction of Yaosang. It is a traditional dance of Manipur, where young boys and girls create a circle and dance while holding hands. Apart from this, traditional sports such as horse riding and wrestling are given equal importance.
