PNG Gas Installation Process in India

The installation of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in India is steadily expanding in the country as it offers a cleaner and more convenient alternative to LPG cylinders. Its installation process in simple but involves few essential checks and inspections before activation

What is PNG Gas?

Piped Natural Gas or PNG is methane which is supplied through a network of mild steel and polyethylene pipes directly to households. Unlike LPG (liquefied Petroleum Gas), which is stored under pressure in cylinders as a liquid, PNG remains in a gaseous state and is delivered at low pressure which makes it a safer and more convenient fuel source for cooking and heating.

Why the switch from LPG to PNG is important?

The transition is done mainly because of two factors; one is economic and the other is safety. According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), PNG has many distinct advantages:

  • Continuous supply: There is no need for booking refills every month or waiting for delivery trucks. It is a 24/7 utility, similar to water or electricity.
  • Cost efficiency: In 2026, PNG remains 20% to 30% cheaper than the non-subsidized LPG. In cities like Delhi and Mumbai, PNG prices hover around Rs.47 to Rs.50 per SCM (Standard Cubic Meter), whereas LPG costs have seen higher volatility.
  • Safety: PNG is lighter than air.  If there is any incident of leak, it will disperse upward into the air which will reduce the risk of fire compared to LPG, which is heavier and stays near the ground.
  • Space Saving: PNG removes the need for storing bulky gas cylinders in the kitchen which frees up available floor space.

Under the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum has mandated that households in areas with existing PNG infrastructure must switch to piped gas. LPG supply may cease three months after PNG connectivity is made available in a locality.

Documents Needed for PNG Gas Installation

To apply for a new connection, you will need to submit or show some documents to the City Gas Distribution Companies, like Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) or Mahanagar Gas (MGL), which require the following:

  • Identity Proof: Aadhaar card, PAN card, Voter ID, or passport.
  • Proof of Ownership/occupancy: Latest electricity bill, water bill, house tax receipt, or the first five pages of the registered sales deed.
  • Rent Agreement: If you are a tenant, a valid rent agreement along with a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the landlord is mandatory.

Steps for PNG Gas Installation Process

Step 1 - Check if PNG services are available in your area by visiting a distributor’s website. Enter details such as your pincode. If the pipeline network is present, you can proceed with the application by filing the form online or by visiting a designated centre.

Step 2 - Applicants need to keep important documents like identity proofs, address proof, and property-related documents like ownership paper in place before applying.

Step 3- Be prepared to pay a refundable security deposit, which typically ranges between Rs.5,000 and Rs.10,000 depending on consumption levels.

Step 4 - After approval, the gas provider will visit the site for inspection, followed by pipeline and meter installation along with safety checks.

Step 5 - Areas where pipeline infrastructure already exists, activation generally takes 7 to 15 days. In newly covered areas, the process may take longer.

Step 6 - After inspection, your LPG stove will be modified to suit PNG pressure, as PNG requires a different air-to-fuel ratio than LPG.

Step 7 - After final pressure test and ensuring no leakage, the gas supply is turned on, and the connection is “gasified”.

Cost of PNG Gas Connection

The cost structure for a new connection involves a one-time refundable security deposit and a small registration fee. However, it is important to note that these costs are indicative and can vary significantly based on the specific connection provider (e.g., IGL, MGL, Adani gas etc.) and your city’s regulatory zone. As of 2026, providers like Indian Oil (IOCL) and others typically follow this pricing model for a basic installation:

Charge Type

Approximate Amount (INR)

Notes

Registration fee

Rs.300 to Rs.500

Usually non-refundable.

Interest-free security deposit

Rs.6,000 to Rs.7,000

Refundable upon permanent disconnection.

EMI schemes

Rs.100 to Rs.500

Many providers allow paying the deposit in instalments through bimonthly bills.

Note: The standard connection is usually up to 7 meters of internal piping which is provided for free. If your kitchen layout requires a longer pipeline, the provider will charge an additional rate per meter as per their current tariff card. Always request a signed quotation from the surveyor before the installation begins.

Safety and Precautions Required

While PNG is inherently safer than LPG, you still need to be aware of precautions:

  • Make sure your kitchen has adequate cross-ventilation. Never block the area around the gas meter or the yellow pipelines.
  • If you detect a “rotten egg” smell (mercaptan added for leak detection), immediately close the main isolation valve (the one before the meter) and the appliance valve (near the stove).
  • If you suspect a leak, do not switch on or off any electrical appliances as there could be a chance of triggering an ignition.

Regular Maintenance

  • Don’t ever attempt to modify or repair pipeline yourself.
  • The flexible tube connected to stove must be checked for cracks and ideally replaced every two years.
  • Schedule a yearly check-up with a certified technician.
  • It is crucial to keep the area around the gas meter and pipelines free from obstructions, foliage, or stored items so that immediate access can be ensured during times of emergency.
  • It is advised to never store flammable liquids or combustible materials near the gas meter or your cooking area.

Making decision to transition to PNG is a significant step toward a safer, more economical, and eco-friendly home. By carefully planning your installation layout, you can enjoy seamless and reliable energy supply.

FAQs on PNG Gas Installation Process in India

  1. Can you use your existing LPG stove with a PNG connection?

Yes, you can use your existing LPG stove, but you must have an authorised technician perform a “nozzle conversion.” This change allows the burner to handle specific pressure and flow of natural gas.

  2. Is the gas supply interrupted if you experienced a power outage?

No, the gas remains uninterrupted during power cut as PNG network is a pressurised underground system that operates independent of the electrical grid.

  3. What should you do if you suspect a gas leak in your home?

If there is a suspected gas leak, close the main isolation valve immediately and the appliance valve. Do not turn on or off any electrical switches and open all the windows for proper ventilation.

  4. How many appliances can be connected to a single PNG meter?

You can normally connect two appliances such as gas stove and a water heater to a standard domestic meter.

  5. Is PNG safer than LPG connection?

Yes, PNG is safer because it is lighter than air and dissipates upward during leaks, whereas LPG settles on the floor, posing a higher risk of fire or explosion.
