The government had reduced prices of LPG gas in Mumbai in the month of May following the steep fall in gas prices internationally due to the coronavirus pandemic affecting the world economy. The 21-day lockdown has led to a surge in the demand for LPG gas in the city as more people have to cook meals at home. However, the prices of gas have been increased for the month of June. The price of non-subsidised gas was hiked in February in metro cities but following the economic downturn due to the coronavirus, this is the second consecutive reduction in prices in just two months. The uncertainty around the lockdown could lead to panic buying which led the government to announce that there would be no need to do so as there is sufficient supply of LPG gas for all users in the city of Mumbai and the rest of the country as well.
LPG prices are revised every month by retailers. The price is connected to the exchange rate of the rupee and the US dollar as well as LPG’s international benchmark rate. Every family is entitled to 12 cylinders per year at subsidised rate, following which they would have to buy the cylinders at the market price.
