History of Thrissur Pooram

The history of Thrissur Pooram is more than 200 years ago. This festival was first started by the Raja Rama Verma who was also known as Sakthan Thampuran (Maharaja of Cochin). Before this festival, Arattupuzha Pooram was celebrated as the largest temple festival in Kerala. During this festival, many temples of Thrissur came to Aarattupuzha for celebration.

In 1796, due to heavy rains, temples from Thrissur were late and were not able to reach Arattupuzha Pooram on time. The entry of these temples was denied to the Pooram festival because they were late. This made people very angry, and they directly went to Sakthan Thampuran to get justice and then Maharaja declared a new festival, Thrissur Pooram, on the same day, in May 1796. He invited ten temples and their deities to come to Vadakkunnathan Temple of Lord Shiva in Thrissur.
