Shankaracharya Jayanti will be observed this year on 21st April, Tuesday. Adi Shankaracharya, was a well-known Indian philosopher and spiritual guide, was born on this day. He wrote many commentaries on important Hindu scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. On this day, people honor his teachings and his role in establishing the Advaita Vedanta philosophy.
Here are the main reasons why Shankaracharya Jayanti is important and celebrated:
Adi Shankaracharya was born in the village of Kalady in the state of Kerala. His parents were devotees of Lord Shiva, and they prayed for a child for many years. According to tradition, one day Lord Shiva came into his father’s dream and asked him to choose a blessing, i.e. either he could have a son who would live a long life, or he could be very wise and knowledgeable. His father chose the second blessing of a wise son. With the blessings of Lord Shiva, a son was born, and he was named Shankar. Shankar’s father died when he was only three years old. Even as a child, Shankar was very intelligent and had great spiritual qualities. People started calling him Shankaracharya because of his wisdom and spiritual knowledge.
From an early age, Shanker wanted to become a monk. At first, his mother did not agree. One day, Shankar was taking a bath in a river, and a crocodile caught his leg. Shankar asked his mother to let him become a monk or the crocodile would kill him. At that time, his mother said yes. After that, Shankar started his journey as a mink. He traveled across India to spread spiritual knowledge and the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. Even though his life was short, but his teachings made him famous all over the world, and he is still remembered with great respect today.
