Cheiroba in 2025

One of Manipur's most significant festivals is Cheiraoba. It is notably joyfully and pompously commemorated by the state's Meiteis. It is observed in April and, for Meiteis living in Manipur and other places, it is the start of the lunar new year.

The followers of Vaishnav Hindus celebrate it on March 30th, in accordance with the solar Hindu calendar, whereas the adherents of Sanamahism, the indigenous religion of Meitei, celebrate it on the first day of the lunar new year.

How is Cheiroba Celebrated?

The Meiteis celebrate this day by cleaning their homes and dressing elegantly in traditional clothing. In front of the gates, vibrant flowers and incense sticks are presented to the local deity together with a variety of traditional foods like eromba, pakora, ooti, and many more. Additionally, the neighbours trade dishes with one another. Following the delicious meal, folks spend the day drinking and having fun at the closest hillocks. This is important because, given the quantity of food ingested, it is relevant to the food's digestion. Additionally, it is thought that anyone who ascend the hilltop to worship the deity on this new Meiteis year will be bestowed with fortune and scale greater heights in life.

Married daughters, sisters, and aunts bring gifts for the male family members when they visit their paternal houses on Cheiraoba. By following this custom, they are returning the presents they were given on Ningol Chakouba day. The people of the Manipur valley gather at night to celebrate the arrival of the much-awaited Meitei new year with the Manipuri traditional dance, Thabal Chongba.
