Soil plays a very important role in our environment. It supports more than 95% of the food we eat and provides essentials nutrients to plants for their growth. It helps in cleaning water, storing carbon, and supporting life on Earth. However, for some years soil has been facing serious problems like pollution, erosion, and poor use of the soil. These problems lead to a reduction in the nutrients and vitamins in our food.
World Soil Day is a special day which reminds people about the importance of soil on Earth every year. World Soil Day is observed on 5 December every year. This day raises awareness about the importance of healthy soil and encourages people to protect it. Every year, there is a special and different theme for this day. If there is not good soil on Earth, then our life would not be possible.
The theme for 2025 is: “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage.”
World Soil Day was first suggested in 2002 by the International Union of Soil Sciences. With support from Thailand and the FAO, it became a global event to raise awareness about soil. The United Nations officially declared Soil Day in June 2013, and it has been observed around the world since December 2014.
