Each year on 8th June, people across different countries celebrate World Ocean Day. It is a time to reflect and appreciate how important our oceans are for living, and how important it is to protect them. The theme for 2025 is “Sustainable Fishing Means More” which showcases the numerous advantages of sustainable fishing habits, more than just fish availability. It is an impactful day to think about how sustainable fishing nourishes ecosystems, builds stronger communities, and protects our future planets.
The seas of our planet are so much more than vast bodies of water; they are the lifeblood of our planet. Oceans comprise over 70% of the Earth surface, produces more than 50% of our oxygen, and absorb almost 30% of the anthropogenic CO2 released into the atmosphere.
More than 3 billion people rely on oceans for food, livelihood, and climate mitigation. Therefore, they are often deemed a lifeline.
However, these intricately connected systems are being pushed to the breaking point of acidification, microplastic pollution, habitat destruction, overfishing, and climate change.
World Ocean Day intends to spur action by promoting an annual theme. This year’s theme focuses on sustainable fisheries.
According to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), sustainable fishing promotes fish availability, guarantees the long-term provision of seafood, conserves coastal biodiversity, and facilities the livelihoods of coastal communities. MSC estimates sustainable fisheries can provide an estimated annual increase of 16 million tons of wild seafood production, result in improvements to the environment of over 400%, and provide more consumer choice when it comes to responsible labeling across over 66 countries.
Oceans are enriched, animated, and critical life systems that are threatened with extinction by humans.
In commemoration of World Ocean Day on 8th June, the UN Ocean Conference 2025 commenced in Nice, France under the title “Ocean Wonders”. To safeguard marine ecosystems, the world's leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 and anticipated more funding.
Ecosystems are not the only ones that benefit from sustainable fishing; the seafood industry does as well.
World Ocean Day encourages everyone to take meaningful, small actions to protect their oceans. Reduce plastic waste, support sustainable fishing practices, consume MSC-certified seafood, participate in local beach clean-ups, and share awareness on social media using the hashtag, #WorldOceanDay.
World Ocean Day 2025 serves as a reminder that sustainable fishing is about maintaining entire ecosystems, communities, and the future of our world, not only about protecting marine life. Each of us may help create a healthier, more vibrant ocean by making thoughtful decisions.
On 8th June, the whole world celebrates Ocean Day with the hope of raising awareness or taking action to protect our oceans.
The theme for 2025 to celebrate World Ocean Day is “Sustainable Fishing Means More”, which highlights how we can protect marine biodiversity, support local communities and ensure long-run food safety through sustainable fishing.
The ocean creates more than half of the world’s oxygen, absorbs CO2, controls the climate, and provides billions of people’s livelihood globally.
People can help protect oceans by making sustainable seafood choices, reducing plastic use, participating in coastal cleanup events, advocating ocean- friendly policies, and raising awareness and education.
The greatest threats to our oceans include coral reefs, overfishing, ocean acidification, rising temperatures, and plastic pollution. These issues are endangering the health of our planet, destroying ecosystems, and harming marine life.
