World Music Day

In 1982, Maurice Fleuret, Director of Music and Dance in France's Ministry of Culture, and Jack Lang, who was the French Minister of Culture, organised World Music Day. The World Music Day celebration took place on the summer solstice. Maurice Fleuret and Jack Lang devised a concept with architect-scenographer Christian Dupavillon to gather musicians on the streets of Paris to celebrate this day.  In France, a music concert was conducted on 21 June 1982 to honour amateur as well as professional musicians. Then in 1985, several countries embraced this yearly concert during the European Year of Music. Later on in 1997, during the European Festival of Music in Budapest, a contract was signed. Since then, World Music Day has been observed globally to recognise, encourage, and appreciate musicians and singers.
