Why do we celebrate Heart Day?

World Heart Day

The main aim of celebrating this day is to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, its prevention and the impact it has on people across the world. CVD including heart disease and stroke claims 17.9 million lives every year.

Given this fact, the day highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. The day is celebrated every year with a theme.

History of World Heart Day

The first World Heart Day was celebrated on 29 September 1999 after the World Heart Federation (WHF) collaborated with the World Health Oraganisation (WHO). The World Health Federation was founded by the former President of the WHF, Antoni baye de Luna.

The day used to be celebrated on a Sunday until 2011, when it was moved to the last Sunday in September. In 2012, world leaders committed to reducing global mortality from NCDs by 25% by 2025.
