History of World Gratitude Day

The origins of World Gratitude Day can be traced to a Thanksgiving dinner in Hawaii in 1965. This Thanksgiving dinner, sponsored by Sri Chinmoy, the director of the UN meditation group, took place at the International East-West Centre. High-ranking delegates and delegates from several nations were present at the dinner. Sri Chinmoy suggested that the globe observe Thanksgiving as a unifying festival at supper. It was decided by all of the delegates and officials to hold an annual gathering of gratitude in their respective nations. On September 21, 1966, a number of nations observed World Gratitude Day the following year. The first World Gratitude Day was celebrated on September 21, 1977, at the UN Meditation Group headquarters in New York. During the event, Sri Chinmoy was acknowledged for his concept of an Appreciation Day.
