The significance of engineering in India’s growth story 

Engineering has been central to India’s development, from infrastructure to innovation. The Institution of Engineers (India) (founded in 1920, headquartered in Kolkata) is the world’s largest multi-disciplinary engineering body. It has over a million members, enabling professional engineering education and global recognition of Indian engineers like the AMIE equivalency to a British honour's degree.

Celebrating national icons: Sir M. Visvesvaraya and Engineer’s Day 

In India, Engineer’s Day is celebrated on 15 September, marking the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, an eminent civil engineer and statesman honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 1955.  

His pioneering contributions to dams, irrigation, industrialisation and education inspire engineers' nation‑wide even today.  

Modern engineering achievements: Metro Man E. Sreedharan 

Notre national engineering icons also include E. Sreedharan, popularly known as the “Metro Man” of India. He led transformative projects like the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro, and later advised on the Kochi Metro, revolutionising urban transport infrastructure across India.  

Engineering leadership: Pushing Indian industry forward 

At global forums like the Global Services Export Conclave, Union Minister Piyush Goyal urged the engineering community to strive towards a US$100 billion export target in design, construction and R&D by 2030, demonstrating India's ambition to expand its engineering reach internationally. 

Engineering Fairs & International Collaboration 

Events like the International Engineering and Technology Fair (IETF) 2023, inaugurated by the President of India, showcased India’s engineering prowess, including cutting‑edge technology and green growth innovations, strengthening global partnerships in engineering and technology.  

How India Observes World Engineering Day 

While UNESCO sets the global stage on 4 March, in India, events may include university seminars, engineering society discussions, hackathons, and awareness campaigns highlighting how engineering can advance sustainable development. Such activities align closely with UNESCO‑WFEO’s vision.  

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead 

Despite a growing engineering workforce, India faces challenges like ensuring quality education, strengthening R&D, and promoting female representation in core engineering fields.  

Events like World Engineering Day can serve as platforms to address these gaps, inspire innovation, and support inclusive and sustainable engineering progress.
