World Bee Day 2026

World Bee Day is celebrated on 20th May every year to highlight the role of tiny pollinators in maintaining biodiversity and ensuring food security through pollination. Its aim is to raise awareness about the threats, bees and other pollinators face and encourage everyone to protect bees through sustainable practices.

History of World Bee Day

World Bee Day

In 2016, at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Conference for Europe, it was proposed by the Republic of Slovenia to celebrate 20th May each year as World Bee Day with the support of the International Federation of Beekeepers’ Association or Apimondia.

The United Nations approved Slovenia’s proposal to mark the birth anniversary of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping as World Bee Day.

Importance of Bees

  1. About 90% of wild flowering plant species and over 75% of food crops worldwide, depend at least partially on animals for pollination.
  1. Bees and other pollinators maintain plant diversity which in turn supports mammals, birds and other wildlife.
  1. Crops pollinated by insects are often of better quality.
  1. Beekeeping is the source of income in many rural areas.

2026 Theme for World Bee Day

The 2026 theme for World Bee Day is “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All.” This highlights how critical role bees play in agriculture and ecosystem. Bees and other pollinators like butterfly, bats and birds are indicators of environmental health.

Threats Bees Face

All pollinators are facing threats because of human activities like intensive farming, pesticide use, deforestation and rapid urbanisation. Due to climate change, the extinction rates of invertebrate are at 35% and that of vertebrate pollinators at 17%.

Ways to Protect Pollinators

  1. Planting native flowers with different bloom times to support healthy ecosystem.
  1. Invest in studying pollinator health diseases and trends in population to guide conservation strategies.
  1. Educate farmers and beekeepers about threats from pesticides to bees and how they can take small individual initiatives to build a pollinator-friendly environment.
  1. Restoring degraded habitats, protecting wildflower meadows, and creating green corridors in urban areas.
  1. Practicing crop diversification will create a more balanced ecosystem.
