World Animal Day 2025

Animals are an essential aspect of nature since they contribute significantly to environmental conservation and human well-being. All of the species in the ecosystem coexist to keep nature's ecology in balance. World Animal Day is observed every year on 4 October for animal rights and welfare.

History of World Animal Day

World Animal Day

The inaugural World Animal Day ceremony was held in Berlin in 1925 by Heinrich Zimmermann. He organised the event intending to spread awareness about the welfare of animals. The patron saint of animals, Saint Francis of Assisi, also celebrates the feast day on 4 October. Saint Francis was a beloved figure among Catholics and was renowned for his extraordinary relationship with all living creatures. On 4 October, many Catholic churches bless pets in remembrance of Saint Francis’ contribution to the well-being of animals. For ecologists, this day has become a forum to debate the issues of endangered animals. Since 2003, the Naturewatch Foundation, a UK-based charity, has sponsored the event and developed opportunities for animal lovers across the globe to participate and make their voices known in favour of animals. World Animal Day celebrates all animals including wild, domesticated, and endangered species. This day serves as a reminder that we must protect and respect all living beings that are a part of our environment.

How to Celebrate World Animal Day

If you wish to observe World Animal Day, you can participate in any of the official activities taking place on 4 October. On this day, pet adopt-a-thons are organised in cities all over the world. You can purchase pet toys, exchange your experiences with other pet owners, and learn about pet care during these events.  Many peaceful protests are also held on World Animal Day. These peaceful protests highlight various forms of animal cruelty like whale killing, bullfighting, and wildlife poaching, as well as aim at providing better treatment to livestock.
