National Science Day 2026

Every year, 28 February is celebrated as National Science Day in India. It is commemorated in the memory of Sir C.V. Raman’s discovery of a specific effect of light, that was later named after him as the Raman Effect. It also recognizes the contribution of every scientist whose discovery made human life easier.

National Science Day Theme for 2026

National Science Day

Every year a specific theme is decided for National Science Day. The theme for 2026 is “Science for Sustainable Development: Promoting Green Technologies.” The objective is to support the use of eco-friendly technologies, underline the significance of sustainability and bring awareness to the mainstream.

Historical Significance of National Science Day

The discovery of a specific type of scattering of light by CV Raman, which was previously unknown, and later named as the Raman Effect, was a revolution in the field of science. Through this it became easy to identify the molecular structure of a molecule. This day is now observed to inspire the younger generation and keep them curious and interested in scientific research.

About C.V. Raman

Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman, widely known as C.V. Raman, was born in Southern India in 1888. He was the first Indian to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for the discovery of a particular effect of scattering of light. His research initiated future advancements in the field of molecular fingerprinting and light scattering.

Significance of Raman Effect

The Raman Effect occurs when light passes through a clear material and results in a change of its wavelength. This discovery widened the scope of studying molecular structure, how molecules behave, and how it changes. The areas it benefited includes:

  • Detecting new diseases and finding their cure.
  • Understanding different molecular compositions.
  • Observing and studying planetary atmospheres.
  • Detecting substances and investigating crimes in forensics.

Conclusion

National Science Day isn’t just a celebration of the Raman Effect, but a reminder of how powerful science is in understanding the environment and providing life-changing solutions. It signifies the importance of curiosity and human intellect in solving nature’s mystery and using it to benefit mankind.
