History of International Yoga

Yoga Day

In September 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the idea of International Yoga Day in a speech to the UN General Assembly. At that time, India's ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, had sponsored a resolution to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day. As June 21 falls on the Summer Solstice, the day of the year with the greatest amount of sunlight, it was selected as the date. With 177 nations supporting the declaration of June 21 as International Yoga Day, this resolution has the most co-sponsors of any UN resolution. On June 21, 2015, in New Delhi, nearly 36,000 people—among them Prime Minister Modi and numerous other prominent international politicians—performed 21 asanas (yoga poses) for 35 minutes. This marked the inaugural International Yoga Day, which has since been celebrated globally.
