International Mother Language Day 2026

International Mother Language Day is a global observance held annually on 21 February. On International Mother Language Day, we celebrate the diversity of voices that enrich our world.

What is International Mother Language Day?

International Mother Language Day was first proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 and has been observed since February 2000. The day aims to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

The initiative for this day came from Bangladesh, where people fought for the recognition of their mother language, Bangla. Sadly, on 21 February 1952, students lost their lives while demonstrating for this cause.

Why does Multilingual Education Matter?

Globally, a significant portion of the population lacks access to education in a language they speak or understand. This challenge is particularly acute for minority communities, who often face disadvantages due to socio-economic inequalities.

UNESCO highlights that multilingual education is a cornerstone for achieving equitable access to education and lifelong learning opportunities for everyone. Education that begins in a person's mother tongue has been shown to be more effective, especially in the early years. The theme for International Mother Language Day 2026 is ‘Youth Voices on Multilingual Education’.
