Every year, International Fruit Day is observed on 1 July with a different fruit being selected each year. In 2026, the Fruit of the Year is Dates and the theme is ‘Plant, Learn, Celebrate’.
This is a day that was created with the intention of bringing together individuals and organisations across the world with the message of sustainability through the simple act of sharing fruits and promoting their health benefits.
International Fruit Day encourages people to bring and share their favorite fruits with others, whether at home, school, or in public, with a focus on children, families, and communities. It is a celebration of solidarity, nourishment, sustainability, and cultural diversity.
This year International Fruit Day, which is 1 July 2026, falls on a Wednesday. The fruit of the year is Date Dates.

When former social work students from Alice Salomon's University of Applied Science in Berlin got together in April 2007 with the intention of promoting social cohesion via shared meals, the idea for International Fruit Day was formed. This idea developed into a celebration honoring fruits as representations of harmony in nature, health, and peace. The first celebration was held on 1st July 2007, in Berlin's Mauerpark, which was previously a place of division but is now a place of harmony and love. Since then, International Fruit Day has grown into a global celebration, with events taking place in Kenya, Indonesia, Germany, and Mexico.
