World Heart Day is celebrated on 29 September in a bid to inform people around the world that Cardiovascular disease (CVD) including strokes and heart disease is the world’s leading cause of death. On the day, individuals, families, communities, and governments take part in various activities which enables them to take charge of their heart as well as of their near and dear ones.
World Heart Federation on the day unites people from all backgrounds and countries in the fight against CVD and drives international action to encourage heart-healthy living. It needs to be mentioned here as many as 17.9 million people across the globe lose their lives every year due to CVD that includes heart disease and strokes.

Theme for 2019 World Heart Day
The theme for the annual event in 2019 is ‘My Heart, Your Heart’
As part of the day, the World Heart Federation in 2019 wants to create a global community of heart heroes. The nongovernmental organisation wants you take a pledge that you:
- Will cook and eat healthy
- Will exercise more and remain active
- Will say no to smoking as well as help the loved ones quit smoking
- Will work on lowering their cholesterol levels
- Will invest in heart-healthy workplaces
- Will support the policies which aim to promote healthy hearts

The main aim of celebrating this day is to highlight the actions that you can take in order to prevent cardiovascular disease.
History of World Heart Day
The establishment of World Heart Day was announced in 1999 by World Heart Federation (WHF) in partnership with World Health Organization (WHO). The idea of the event was visualized by the former president of World Health Federation (WHF) named Antoni Baye de Luna. Luna was the president of the nongovernmental organisation from 1997 to 1999. Until 2011, the day was observed throughout the world on the last Sunday of the month of September. However, since 2013 the event has been celebrated on 29 September across the world after the World Heart Federation decided to do so. The first observance of World Heart Day was held on 24 September 2000.
Celebrations of World Heart Day
As part of World Heart Day celebrations, public talks, sporting events, and concerts are organized. In addition to this, educational programs that are designed to engage the public also form an integral part of the day’s celebrations. It needs to be mentioned here that the World Heart Federation, which is a nongovernmental organisation sponsors the annual event.
