International Day of Peace 2019

The International Day of Peace is celebrated every year on 21 September across the world. The day is devoted to building the ideals of peace among all countries and peoples. World or International Peace Day is also known as Peace Day, established in 1981 by the United Nations with a unanimous resolution.

The World Peace Day or popularly known as Peace Day offers a common date for all to commit to peace and to build a culture of peace.

The International Day of Peace 2019 theme is ‘Climate Action for Peace’, drawing attention to combatting climate change as a direction to promote and protect peace across the world. While speaking to Maoris and people of the Pacific Islands in New Zealand, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasised four important measures that priority of Governments to attain carbon neutrality by 2050 – stop subsidising fuel; tax pollution, not people; focus on a green economy, not a grey economy; stop building new coal plants by 2020.

How is International Day of Peace Celebrated in 2019

At the United Nations, the Secretary-General will celebrate the occasion in the Peace Garden the headquarters of the UN by ringing the Peace Bell and will observe a minute of silence. In the ceremony, the United Nations Messengers of Peace will participate, and it’ll be followed by a Student Observance. About 700 students from high school and college will interact with the UN Messengers of Peace. Also, selected students will have the opportunity to share the peace projects they have been involved in the last year.

What Can Youth Do to Get Involved in the International Day of Peace

As per the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), youths play an important role in increasing awareness, promoting sustainable lifestyles, running educational programs, supporting renewable energy, conserving nature, implementing adaptation and mitigation projects, and adopting environmentally-friendly practices.

In 2019, the International Day of Peace Student Observance will take be held on 20 September at the UN Headquarters. This will provide a foundation for youths to showcase their projects about fighting climate change as well as about promoting peace.
