What is a CNG Kit?

When a car owner wishes to switch to CNG, they need a CNG kit. Only when the car is designed to run on gasoline or diesel does this item need to be installed. There are CNG cars on the market, but they can be expensive.

Fitting a CNG kit to an existing petrol or diesel vehicle is a much more affordable option. A CNG kit usually comes with:

  1. Pressure Gauge
  2. Regulator
  3. Clamps
  1. High Pressure Tube
  2. Refilling Valve
  3. Electric Control Unit

Types of CNG Kit

There are two types of CNG Kits. They are:

  1. Venturi CNG: The Venturi CNG kit is a mixing device that feeds gas into the engine of the car. Compared to other kits, venturi kits are significantly more cheap and simpler to install in vehicles. Based on the input from the throttle, these kits pump a predetermined amount of gas into the engine's intake manifold. Any vehicle, whether it is powered by a carburetor or a fuel-injected engine, may easily install a Venturi CNG kit. Another option is to install it with or without an ECU, or electronic control unit.
  2. Sequential CNG: When it comes to automotive installation, sequential CNG kits are thought to be the superior choice because they regulate the gas flow through the injectors installed alongside the petrol injectors in the manifold. The amount of gas injected into the engine is likewise electrically controlled and monitored by a separate ECU for CNG kits. Although sequential CNG kits are the preferable choice, they can only be fitted in vehicles that have electronic fuel injection.

Advantages of Venturi and Sequential CNG Kit

Venturi CNG Kit

Sequential CNG Kit

Affordable

Provides better performance and mileage

Installation process is easy

No performance tuning required

No complex wiring system

Promises better pickup

A 12 kg cylinder will cost roughly around Rs.40,000

Higher octane rating and lower combustibility

Disadvantages of Venturi and Sequential CNG Kit

Venturi CNG Kit

Sequential CNG Kit

Unpredictable

Initial cost is high

Difficult to control the flow of CNG to engine

Installation process can be difficult

Can cause pickup loss and stalling

Requires frequent tuning and cleaning

What is open-loop and Closed-loop sequential systems?

Open-Loop Sequential Systems

The Open-Loop system for a Sequential CNG kit does not employ the Oxygen or Lambda sensor to gather feedback from the exhaust. By pouring additional fuel into the engine as needed, this system enables drivers to accelerate their cars as neede

Open Loop System advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

Disadvantages

Cost effective if there are no lambda sensors or if the vehicle is old

Creates huge amount of exhaust emissions

Performance is better

Can cause damage to the engine and valves due to large amount of heat emitted.

Pick-up is better

Closed Loop System

Closed-Loop procedure Sequential CNG kits use the Lambda sensor or oxygen sensor that is installed in a vehicle's exhaust to receive feedback and transmit it to the ECU, making them unquestionably the more environmentally beneficial alternative. This sensor determines whether the exhaust emissions are within acceptable bounds. The ECU regulates the CNG petrol flow into the engine using this feedback to reduce excessive emissions.

Advantages

Disadvantages

Eco-friendly

Performance is reduced

Fuel efficient

Acceleration drops down

The injection of gas into the engine is optimal and precise

FAQs on CNG Kit Price in India

  • What makes CNG illegal in BS6?

The BS6 pollution standards compel automakers to employ a new type of catalytic converter. The new catalytic converters were previously exclusively offered with factory-installed vehicles. Therefore, retrofitting a CNG kit would not result in the vehicle reducing emissions.

  • Are CNG kits permitted in India?

You need a license to use a Retro-Fitted CNG Kit in your vehicle.

  • Is converting a car to CNG safe?

Absolutely, converting your vehicle to run on CNG is safe.

  • At what temperature does CNG ignite?

CNG ignites at 315 degrees Celsius.

  • Is CNG cheaper than petrol?

Yes, CNG is cheaper than petrol and around 40% more efficient too.

  • Should I purchase CNG or EV?

An electric vehicle is your best option if you're willing to pay a significant amount of money and want to drive well with little highway trips. Similarly, in the case of budget constraints, you can opt for CNG cars if driving performance is not a priority in the long run.

  • Why Can't Diesel Cars Use CNG?

Diesel engines cannot run on CNG without a CNG conversion kit. This is due to the fact that whereas gasoline engines utilise spark plugs and have compression ratios that are suitable for CNG fuel, diesel engines operate on compression ignition without the use of a spark plug and have far greater compression ratios than necessary.
