  • Total SA acquires a 37.4% stake in Adani Gas

Total SA has agreed to acquire a 37.4% stake in Adani Gas Limited for Rs.5,700 crore for India’s and the French energy major’s biggest bet on the clean energy attempt.

This acquisition has also marked the largest foreign direct investment in the city gas distribution industry in India. This deal will give control of Adani Gas to Total with both holding a 37.4% stake in the company with the remaining 25.2% is held by public shareholders.

Total is the world’s second-largest liquefied natural gas company. In a press conference, they mentioned that the company will be buying the take in Adani Gas through a combination of a tender offer to the public shareholders and from the Adani family. The company will acquire 25.2% from the public and the rest 12.2% from the Adani family.

The two major stakeholders can hold 37.4% each as any publicly traded company has to maintain a minimum public shareholding of 25%. The Adani family owned a 78.4% stake in Adani Gas when it was listed on 5 November 2018. Post the talk of acquisition the shares of Adani Gas increased by 9.26% to Rs.150.40 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

This expanded partnership aims to develop re-gasification terminals including the Dhamra LNG located on the east coast apart from selling liquefied natural gas (LNG) and distribute gas through the company to 7.5% of India’s population. The two companies also aim to import and retail natural gas by building a fuel retail network of 1,500 stations along highways and intercity connections in a span of 10 years.
