A PAN card application form, referred to as Form 49A or Form 49AA, is used for the allotment of the Permanent Account Number (PAN).

PAN cards are essential for the Income Tax Department to identify taxpayers. As such, each earning citizen of India is required to have a PAN card for correspondence, TDS / TCS credits, specified transactions, returns of wealth / FBT / gift / income, tax payments, etc.

In case you have never made an application for a PAN card before, following are the procedures through which you can apply for and avail the same.

Form 49A must be filled in by Indian citizens who are located within or outside the country, while Form 49AA must be used by NRIs.

Procedure for Filling Online PAN Card Application Form 49A / Form 49AA

There are four options for filling PAN card application online:

  1. Physical form submission along with documents
  2. e-KYC-based
  3. e-Sign option
  4. Digital Signature based

1. For Physical submission mode

In this method, after the online data entry, the applicant will have to print out the form, attach photos and send the application along with required documents. Given below is the process involved:

Step-1 Choose the category of the individual applying for a PAN card

Step-2 Complete the form with all the required details and cross-check to verify that the information provided is accurate before proceeding to pay.

Step-3 Make the payment online and you will receive a duly filled Form 49A / Form 49AA along with the payment receipt in your email.

Step-4 Get a print out of the form and affix two passport-sized photographs to it.

Step-5 Sign the form and attach the supporting documents as required

Step-6 Send it to NDSL at Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NDSL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No.341, Survey No.997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune - 411016.

2. e-KYC-based

In this method, the applicant's Aadhaar details will be taken for the PAN card application. The PAN card will be sent to the residential address that has been given in the Aadhaar card. It is not necessary to send a PAN application along with documents to NSDL.

3. e-Sign option

In this method, one has to upload required documents and scanned photo while completing the application form. Attested documents will have to be submitted physically to NSDL.

4.Digital Signature based

In this method, one has to upload documents and images and then send the attested supporting documents to NSDL.

Tips to Fill PAN Card Application Form (Form 49A /Form 49AA)

Steps to Download PAN Card Online

You can download your PAN Card online through either by visiting the Tax Information Network of Income Tax Department or the UTIITSL website. Listed below are the steps which can be followed to get the PAN card online.

Step 1 - Visit

Step 2 - Enter the acknowledgement number, date of birth, and captcha code

Step 3 - Click on ‘Submit’

By visiting the UTIITSL website

Step 1 - Vist

Step 2 - Click on ‘Apply PAN Card’ under ‘For PAN Card’ tab

Step 3 – Click on Download e-PAN

Step 4 – Enter details like PAN, date of birth, GSTIN number, and captcha code

  6. The application fee is Rs.39 + applicable GST for an Indian applicant. In case of an NRI applicant, the fee is Rs.864 + applicable GST.

  8. After the payment has been made and the applicant has sent all the required documents to UTITSL/NSDL, the application will be processed.

  10. You can get your PAN card within 2 days by applying for the same through the NSDL website. However, in general, it is delivered within 15 to 20 working days.

  11. When is form 49A used?
  12. This application form is used when applying for a PAN card for the first time. Also, it can used in case of correction of information on the existing PAN card.

  13. Can you track the status of your PAN card?
  14. Yes. This can be done online by logging on to Status Tracker. You will have to choose the type of application, key in the acknowledge number, enter the captcha code and then click on ‘Submit’.

  15. How to obtain PAN card application status through SMS?
  16. To get information about the status of your PAN card application through SMS. Type out NSDLPAN along with the 15-digit acknowledgement number to 57575. You can also contact the call centre at 020 – 27218080.

  17. Can I download my e-PAN?
  18. Yes, you can download your e-PAN from the official NSDL portal.

  • Itd Receives 15-25 Lakh Pan Card Applications Form In A Week

    The central government has informed Parliament that the Income Tax Department (ITD) receives PAN card applications Form in the range of 15 to 25 lakh in a week on an average. The Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla informed about this. He added that for processing the PAN Card applications Form and allotment of PAN, the time period ranges between few hours to two weeks. The minister added that as of January 28, a total of 20,73,434 PAN Card applications Form are under process. It needs to be mentioned that the government carries out the allotment of PAN through NSDL e-Gov and UTIITSL.

  • Government requires mandatory Aadhaar for PAN card and I-T returns

    The government has decided to decrease the limit on cash transaction to Rs.2 lakh from Rs.3 lakh and make Aadhaar number compulsory for PAN card application and filing income tax returns. These decisions were part of amendments that were moved to the finance bill which puts the budget proposals into effect.

    The Budget of 2017 had proposed that cash transactions of over Rs.3 lakh value be banned but the Finance Bill lowers the benchmark. This was done in order to prevent the flow of black money. In order to ensure a deterrent, penalty for violation is equal to the amount that is transacted.
