    NSDL is the National Securities Depository Limited which was established in 1996. NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited was originally set up as a Depository in 1995. On behalf of the Income Tax Department, the Tax Information Network (TIN) was set up as a repository of nationwide Tax related information. TIN was set up to modernize the current system of collecting and processing direct taxes, and to better enhance monitoring and accounting of taxes using information technology.

    New PAN Application on TIN-NSDL for Indian Residents

    Indian residents can use Form 49A available on the TIN-NSDL website. Indian citizens located outside the country should also use Form 49A.

    The form can be filled online.

    Filling Form 49A

    Provide the following details in the PAN Card application form.

    1. Full name
    2. Abbreviations of the above name, as you would like it, to be printed on the card
    3. Have you ever been known by any other name?
    4. Gender
    5. Date of birth / incorporation / agreement / partnership or trust deed / formation of body of individuals / association of persons
    6. Details of parents (applicable to individuals only)
    7. Address for communication. 'R' means Residence and 'O' means Office.
    8. Telephone number and e-mail id
    9. Status of applicant
    10. Registration number
    11. Aadhaar number (in case of ‘individual’ category)
    12. Source of income
    13. Name and address of representative assessee
    14. Proof of identity and address
    15. Other details: depository account
    16. Signature/ left thumb impression

    Submitting the Form and Payment

    Once you have completed filling up the form, you can submit it. In case there are any errors or missing fields, you will be prompted to correct it. You can then make the corrections and resubmit the form. Once this is done, the form will be displayed for you to verify and confirm that all the data is correct.

    For cards deliverable within India, the fee is Rs. 107 (Rs. 93 + 14.5% service tax).

    For cards deliverable to address outside India, the fee is Rs. 989.00 [(Application fee 93.00 + Dispatch Charges 771.00) + 14.5% service tax].

    You will be directed to the payment page. You can use any of the following modes to make the payment.

    • Demand draft
    • Debit Card
    • Credit Card
    • Net banking

    On successful payment, an acknowledgment screen will be displayed. You should save and print this document. The acknowledgment will contain the following information.

    • A 15-digit unique acknowledgment code
    • Category of applicant
    • Applicant Name
    • Father's Name (in case of 'Individual')
    • Date of Birth/Incorporation/Partnership or Trust Deed/Agreement/Association of Persons/Formation of Body of Individuals

    Post Payment Procedure

    • Once you have printed the form, you need to affix your photographs, this is only in case of individuals.
    • If you are paying by Demand Draft, attach this to the form.
    • You need to attach copies of your ID, address and date of birth.
    • Sign the document.
    • Put the form and documents in an Envelope labelled “APPLICATION FOR PAN -- N-15 digit Acknowledgement Number”.
    • Ensure the documents reach the following address within 15 days of online application:

    New PAN Application on TIN-NSDL for Foreign Citizens

    Foreign citizens can use Form 49AA available on the TIN-NSDL website. Companies, firms and so on, who do not have an office in India, should also use this form. The form can be filled online.

    Reprint PAN Card on NSDL

    A new PAN card can be issued for two reasons:

    • You require a duplicate card.
    • You require changes to be made to your PAN card details.

    For this, you can fill up the PAN Change Request Form online. The form is available to Indian and foreign citizens. Applicants must fill in all mandatory fields marked with an asterisk. For the fields that require correction, you must tick the corresponding box to indicate that this is the change required. If you do not require any changes, you can fill in the field without ticking any boxes.

    Track your NSDL PAN Status

    On the NSDL website, you can track your application status as well as your payment status.

    Application Status

    • To track your PAN Card application, you can click on “Track your PAN/TAN Application Status” under PAN cards.
    • Select your application type.
    • Enter your acknowledgment number.
    • Enter your name and date of birth.
    • Click on submit to view your status.

    The information you provide should be as mentioned in the application form. For non-individuals, you can fill in the name in the slot for surname. You can search for your status using your name and date of birth after 24 hours of application.

    Transaction Status

    Find out the status of your payment, by clicking on “Know Status of Your Credit Card Transaction for Online Application”.

    • Enter either your Transaction number or Acknowledgment number.
    • Enter your name.
    • Enter your date of birth.
    • Click on “Show status” to view your transaction status.

    Your transaction number will be displayed on the screen when you pay through Credit Card, Debit card or Net banking.

    FAQs on NSDL PAN Card

    1. How do I find out my AO code?

      A list of AO codes is available on the TIN_NSDL website. Under ‘Services”, select “PAN Card”. In the menu of services, you can find AO codes. AO codes are available under the following categories:

      • PAN AO Codes - International Taxation
      • PAN AO Codes - Non International Taxation (other than Mumbai region)
      • PAN AO Codes - Non International Taxation (Mumbai region)
      • PAN AO Codes - Defence personnel
    2. In whose favour should a Demand Draft be made?

      If you choose to pay through DD, it should be in favour of “NSDL-PAN”, payable at Mumbai.

    3. Can anyone else make the payment on my behalf for PAN application?

      Yes, an immediate family member can make the payment for you. Please refer to the table below on who can make the payment.

      Yes. Please refer to the table below. Apart from additional charges, any conversion or exchange rate may also be charged as per the prevailing rates.

    5. Can I cancel my PAN Card?

      You can cancel your PAN card under two categories

      • You have been allotted more than one PAN. You can visit the Income Tax Department website and submit your details to cancel the PAN. You can also fill the PAN Change Request form on the NSDL website. Mention which PAN you are using at the top of the form. Under the field “PANs inadvertently allotted to you”, you can enter the PAN you wish to cancel. A copy of the PAN card you wish to cancel should be submitted along with the form.
      • If you are surrendering your PAN that you are using, you need to visit the local Income Tax Assessing Officer. You need to write a request letter to cancel or surrender it.
