The intended subsidy was raised by the government in October 2023 to Rs 300 every 14.2 kg cylinder for a maximum of 12 refills annually (and correspondingly for 5 kilogramme connections). The effective cost of household LPG for PMUY customers as of February 1, 2024, is Rs 603 for a 14.2 kilogramme LPG cylinder in Delhi.
It is anticipated that this will cost the government Rs 12,000 crore and benefit roughly 10 crore families. This declaration was made prior to the upcoming general elections in April and May. In order to give adult women from low-income households access to deposit-free LPG connections, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was introduced in May 2016.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Ujjwala system on 1 May 2016, under the tagline "Clean fuel, better life". The Government of India supplies LPG connections under this initiative. Its primary goal is to ensure safe access to petrol for families living below the poverty line, particularly for women.
For the fiscal year 2024–2025, the Union Cabinet has approved maintaining the Rs. 300 subsidy provided to PM Ujjwala Yojana customers. The PM Ujjwala Yojana Subsidy will continue to provide subsidies till March 31, 2025. On May 1, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ujjwala scheme.
