The government of India has made LPG cylinders easily accessible, therefore, maximum number of households across the country use LPG.

What is LPG?

Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a mixture of two natural gas liquids: butane and propane. Both the chemicals have few differences in properties and are mixed together to give better energy yields. LPG is in gaseous state at normal temperature and changes to liquid only when cooled down. About 1 litre of LPG gives about 270 litres of gaseous LPG, which means it can be transported easily in a compact container.

How is LPG Different from LNG?

The major difference between Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is the method by which they are liquified. LPG is liquified by applying light pressure and LNG is liquified by exposing to low temperatures. Apart from that, LPG can be stored and shipped in cylinders, whereas LNG is usually transported through pipelines or in purpose built cryogenic tanks.

Advantages of LPG Over Other Fuel

LPG, though similar to natural gas, has different chemical composition. It is made of butane and propane which gives it an advantage over other fuels. The following are the advantages of LPG:

1. LPG has a higher calorific value which means it lasts longer than other fuels.
2. There is no sulphur content in LPG, making it a clean fuel.
3. Using LPG as fuel discharges comparatively lesser greenhouse gases.
4. LPG can be transported easily.

Procedure to Register and Apply for PMUY

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a government initiative to provide domestic LPG connection to women in the country.

Follow the steps mentioned below to apply online for PMUY:

Step 2: Download the form by clicking on the option present on screen

Step 3: Fill in all the required information

Step 4: Submit the form at the nearby LPG centre

Step 5: You are also required to submit all the related documents

Step 6: Once verification is complete, you will get an LPG connection

PMUY offline application:

In order to apply for PMUY offline, you need to fill in all the required information on PMUY and submit it to the nearby LPG centre. You are also required to submit required additional documents like proof of address, Aadhar card of all the family members, etc.

Who is Eligible for LPG Subsidy Under PMUY?

The following conditions should be fulfilled in order to apply for PMUY:

1. The applicant should be a woman
2. The applicant should belong to a Below Poverty Line (BPL) family
3. The applicant should be over 18 years of age
4. The applicant should have a ration card and BPL card
5. None of the applicant's family members should have an LPG connection on their name

PAHAL DBTL - About the Scheme

The Pratyaksh Hanstantrit Labh (PAHAL) or Direct Benefits Transfer for LPG (DBTL) was launched by the government in 2013 in order to curb bogus or duplicate LPG connections. The scheme was modified in 2015. Under this scheme, the LPG is sold at market price and the beneficiaries receive the subsidy amount in their bank account.
