Benefits of Green Gas

The benefits of Green Gas are given below:

  1. Biomethane plants initiate the process by decomposing organic matter with bacteria in an oxygen-free environment, known as Anaerobic Digestion (AD). This produces biogas, a mixture of carbon dioxide and methane. The carbon dioxide is separated from the methane, impurities are eliminated, and the resulting biomethane is injected into the gas grid.
  1. Network operators rigorously monitor the injected biomethane to ensure its composition aligns with existing pipeline and gas appliance requirements. The Environment Agency and WRAP have established a Quality Protocol affirming biomethane as a product, not waste.
  2. Various sources contribute organic matter (feedstock) for the AD process, including arable crops, food waste from households and eateries, waste water treatment plants, and residues from industries like whisky distillation and cheese production.
  3. The government incentivizes biomethane production through schemes like the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS). Strict sustainability standards govern the production process, ensuring feedstock crops are not grown on converted natural habitats and that the carbon footprint of production is at least 60% lower than the European average for heat generation emissions.
  4. AD plants also serve as effective solutions for managing organic waste, yielding high-quality fertilizer utilized by farmers across the UK. Biomethane supplied for vehicles may also receive rewards under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, subject to similar sustainability criteria.
  5. Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs), issued by the GGCS, provide detailed information on the type of green gas produced, the feedstocks utilized, and the sustainability criteria met.

Additional benefits of using Green Gas:

  1. It reduces reliance on fossil fuels: With fossil fuel reserves dwindling, green gas offers a renewable alternative sourced from abundant organic materials like animal waste, crops, food waste, and grass, ensuring a more sustainable energy supply.
  2. It supports local farmers: By offering new income opportunities, such as diversifying away from traditional dairy and meat production, green gas helps bolster the financial stability of while promoting environmental sustainability.
  3. It achieves virtual carbon neutrality: Because green gas primarily consists of organic matter, burning it releases carbon dioxide equivalent to what was absorbed during the matter's growth. This balanced carbon exchange means that green gas has minimal net carbon dioxide emissions, making it nearly carbon neutral.
  4. It fosters biodiversity: The cultivation of sustainable plant matter for green gas production creates diverse ecosystems that provide habitats for various wildlife species to thrive.
  5. It enhances soil health: The organic matter used in green gas production enriches soil quality by replenishing nutrients and fostering healthier soil conditions, further supporting biodiversity and ecosystem vitality.
  6. It promotes transparency and accountability: The production of green gas follows strict regulations, allowing businesses to access detailed information about its extraction methods and origins through certification.
