Gas prices in India are revised every month by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The OMCs that determine gas rates in India are Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Indian Oil Corporation Limited.

Gas prices in the country depend on several factors such as the prices of crude oil in the international markets, custom duty, insurance, the value of the rupee against the dollar, ocean freight, etc.

Over the years, gas prices have fluctuated in India. The prices of LPG cylinders are different in every city because of local taxes.

Some of the factors that affect the price of an LPG cylinder in India are mentioned below:

Difference Between Subsidised and Non-Subsidised LPG Cylinders 

Non-subsidised LPG cylinder prices are the rates that the OMCs determine. Individuals who come under the DBT-PAHAL scheme can purchase gas cylinders at a subsidised rate. The subsidised rates are provided by the government. Individuals who fall under the scheme will need to purchase the cylinder for the non-subsidised rate and will receive the subsidy amount to his/her bank account.

LPG Subsidy

LPG subsidy is provided to poor women and eligible beneficiaries (around 9 crore) under the Ujjwala scheme. Other users, inclusive of households, will have to pay the non-subsidised price to purchase a gas cylinder. Individuals who are fall under the scheme can avail 12 cylinders at a subsidised rate in a year. Rs.200 will be provided as a subsidy for each cylinder and will be debited in the beneficiary’s bank account. 

On 17 October 2022, the Gujarat government announced that they will provide two LPG cylinders for free to individuals who have received gas cylinders under the Ujjwala scheme. Beneficiaries will receive the subsidy amount within three days from the date they have purchased the cylinder.

News About Gas Prices in India

Rs.111 Increase in 19-kg Commercial LPG from 1st January

From 1 January 2026, the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders has increased by Rs.111 in most major cities, while domestic LPG prices remain unchanged. The new rates for commercial cylinders are Rs.1,691.50 in Delhi (up from Rs.1,580.50), Rs.1,642.50 in Mumbai (from Rs.1,531.50), Rs.1,795 in Kolkata (from Rs.1,684), and Rs.1,849.50 in Chennai (from Rs.1,739.50). This rise in prices has led to higher operating costs and could potentially result in increased food prices at hotels, restaurants, and dhabas. Domestic LPG cylinders of 14.2-kg remain stable, with prices at Rs.853 in Delhi, Rs.852.50 in Mumbai, Rs.879 in Kolkata, and Rs.868.50 in Chennai. It provides relief to household consumers despite the rise in commercial fuel costs.
