Rolled out by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to compete with foreign card associates such as VISA and Mastercard, the Rupay came into the market in 2012 but was popularised across the country through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and the concept of zero-balance savings account, a few years later. Customers that opened zero-balance accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and zero-balance savings accounts from banks across the country were offered a free RuPay debit card - which was offered with no initial fee.
